Gourmet Boerie

by Fiona Rossiter on November 22, 2012

Last week we attended the official launch of Gourmet Boerie, which I blogged about over here last month. With Mr en-tow we ventured out to the centre of town last Saturday evening, to check-out the newly opened restaurant. Gourmet Boerie is situated on the corner of Kloof Street in Cape Town, a wonderful vibey part of the Mother City. The vibe at the launch on Saturday evening was indeed tangible!

We were greated at the door with a drink of our choice – you guessed it, bubbles for me, who would ever refuse awesome Cape Bubbly! There were also craft beers on tap, a selection of wines, coolers and soft drinks so everyone was well catered for.

I really love the décor of the restaurant and much to our surprise, we found out that one of our neighbours was instrumental in the development of the space! The décor is modern with wonderful exposed brick work, clean lines, vibrant colours and a stunning bar area, perfect for stopping in for a beer and boerie on your way home in the evening.

The main dining space is casual with long tables and benches; there is an additional seating area outside with large folding doors to allow the restaurant to flow naturally to the outside area, which is great for alfresco summer dining.

I was not entirely to sure what to expect when sampling the “boerie rolls” but I must admit I was very pleasantly surprised. The bread rolls where light and airy and the boerie was perfectly cooked, with that “perfect bite” and certainly not tough or full of gristle. The flavour combinations where heavenly! My favourite was the “The Hangover”, topped with bacon, caramelised pineapple and avocado with cheese sauce followed closely by the “Shroom Sauce”,  topped with a creamy mushroom sauce with fresh herbs and cos lettuce - seriously yummy!

Gourmet Boerie launches in South Africa

by Fiona Rossiter on October 11, 2012

As with braaing, boerewors is part of our National Heritage and something everyone in South Africa is familiar with! Well you will be happy to know that “boerewors” is getting a facelift.

The Boerie is coming! It is no secret that Boerewors is one of the most renowned traditional dishes in the South African cuisine. Whether you braai it with your chops, steam it with mash and veggies or eat it on your meaty pizza, every South African loves a good boerie – especially with an ice-cold Craft Beer! Like most good things, the traditional boerie is due for an upgrade and thus a diverse group of top South African entrepreneurs would like to introduce – GOURMET BOERIE.

The concept behind Gourmet Boerie is all about the traditional Boerewors roll and Craft Beer, with a touch of pizzazz! It boasts a proudly South African stamp, with every item in-store produced locally by South Africans in South Africa. Ingredients have been sourced from local suppliers, all menu items are manufactured in SA and all merchandise and staff uniforms are made from native hemp – even the furniture has been created by a local designer. The three Craft Beers – Jack Black, Darling Brew and Devils Peak – are pumped from a cold room on site, ensuring ever-cold beer.  Local SAB beer, as well as ciders and spritzers for the ladies, are also available.

We are a  Proudly South African business that sells an iconic South African brand in a really fun, sexy and creative space that will be appealing to all South Africans and tourists alike,” pronounces Craig Bright, co-founder of Gourmet Boerie and owner of Rocking the Daisies.

What is on the menu you may ask? Well Silwood-trained, Kate Marek, is taking the reins and will be running the kitchen. Her culinary experience reaches as far as, vocations in food capitals of the world, such as London and Melbourne. Marek’s creations for Gourmet Boerie include The Breakfast Boerie, The Gorgonzola, The Hangover, The Herbiwors, and even a Kiddies Boerie. Gourmet Boerie has something for everyone! Customers have the choice between traditional, lamb, chicken or vegetarian boerewors, with an Ostrich boerewors in the pipeline. All boeries are available on a selection of different bread rolls. For those of us with a sweet tooth they offer traditional South African desserts such as Koeksisters, Milk Tart and Malva Pudding.

As if that isn’t a big enough bite to chew, the Gourmet Boerie team has also developed their very own, unique boerewors recipe, available to buy and braai in the comfort of your own home – along with incredibly delicious sauces to complement each dish. Furthermore, for sport enthusiasts, there will be two 53” high definition plasma screens, crafting a place where local is truly lekker! It’s the ultimate spot for South Africans to enjoy their own culture cuisine with free WiFi and food for thought while also introducing newcomers to this world-famous hospitality.

Gourmet Boerie will be retailing its succulent boerewors and Craft Beers to the public as from October 2012.You can find them at Buitenkloof Studios on the corner of Buitensingel and Kloof Street. All boeries are available as sit down or takeaway – if you don’t have time to sit down and dine, grab a boerie on the run!

To celebrate the launch of Gourmet Boerie they are running a competition on their webpage. To enter the all-time “Win a Gourmet Boerie and a Craft Beerie each week for a year” competition, you can visit their webpage here and scroll down to the bottom to comment.

Gourmet Boerie will be situated on the Corner of Kloof & Buitensingel Street Cape Town.

Summer In the City

by Fiona Rossiter on October 9, 2012

Last week I attended a blogger event,  ”Summer In the City”, hosted by Stiletto J, aka Jeanne Cupido, from Stiletto Adventures. Unfortunately the weather was anything but summery but hey-ho, that did not stop me from donning a pair of super stylish heels and venturing off. The event was held at a rather popular Cape Town spot, called I Love My Laundry, which is a place I have wanted to visit for a while now. It is a laundry with a difference, they serve Dim Sum and coffee and also have weekly fondue evenings – as I said somewhat different and yes they also do laundry! :)

We were all treated to infused Primitiv Vodka shots – my favourite was the Dandelion Infusion – it was super yummy! Gourmet muesli was also on offer, with refreshing mango puree, decadent dates and zingy ginger to wake up your taste buds.

The very pretty underwear on display is from La Ninna Nanna (Which is Italian for “lullaby”) and is available to purchase from I Love My Laundry.

I was pretty much in shoe heaven as there were works of shoe-art on display, courtesy of Europa Art Shoes. There were also amazing prizes on offer from the various sponsors, which included Essie, Incoco, Medi-heel, La Ninna Nanna, and Europa Art – I was lucky enough to win a voucher from the Europa Shoes – a girl can never have too many pairs of shoes!

After a bit of mingling, we were inspired by three amazing entrepreneurs who came to speak to us about their products. They were Diane from Bisousoleil, Keren from Bellabaci and Shantelle from Medi-heel, all great companies and more importantly Proudly South African! Each person  received a wonderful goodie bag with products from these three companies and yummy chocolate treats from CocoaFair!

All in all it was a great evening, a chance to meet fellow bloggers and put faces to a few Twitter handles. Thanks Jeanne for organising it and I Love My Laundry for hosting us!
