LUSH Opening in Cape Town

If you are not familiar with the LUSH brand then you have been missing out! I fell in love with their quirky style of cosmetics and bath products on our visits to the UK. The super exciting news is that they will be opening right here in the Mother City later this month!

This British High Street beauty retailer’s approach to retail-cosmetics is somewhat “out-the-box” – they are a self-proclaimed cosmetics grocers rather than a traditional cosmetics company. Think hand-made, natural and fresh merchandise, butchers’ blocks, pricing by weight, greaseproof paper wrapping and even best-by dates.

In LUSH’s “beauty delis”, soaps are piled high on Provencal-style wooden tables like strange exotic cheeses, whilst a myriad of orbs (fizzing bath ballistics) are presented in-store like perfectly round apples.

I’ve always loved the way fruit and vegetables are displayed in a grocery store,” says Mark Constantine, LUSH’s managing director who set up the company in 1995 with a close-knit team with whom he has worked for over 20 years. The inspiration behind the store design was, he says, “cheese shops and German veggie restaurants – and any fresh fish counter.”

At LUSH, customers are encouraged to choose their cosmetics personally from a pic’n’mix style display. You can choose from chunks of solid shampoo, bubble slices or from the Bio Fresh Range, where products carry use-by dates and are displayed on the chilled fish counter-style cabinet.

“The whole point of LUSH is that it should be fun for our customers and fun for us, while at the same time offering original products that work and give value for money. ” ~ Mark Constantine

LUSH cosmetics are made to be as natural as possible and are crammed with top quality organic (where possible) ingredients such as herbs, fruit, flowers and essential oils. They avoid the use of synthetic preservatives, which are damaging to the environment. Not only do they use the freshest ingredients but the majority of the products have little or no packaging, making it an ecologically responsible choice as well.

Product ingredients are clearly labelled and merchandise includes items that are suitable for both vegetarians and vegans. None of the LUSH products are tested on animals, and they also guarantee that none of their suppliers, test any of their raw materials (including those not bought directly by LUSH) on animals either.

With over 800 shops worldwide, the brand has grown dramatically since the first shop opened in Poole (UK) in April 1994. The September 2012 opening will see the launch of the first Lush store on African soil, here in our very own city – Cape Town!

For a little fun pop over to Lush.com and check your Emotional Brilliance:

Super Mom Blog will be attending the launch and will report back afterwards to tell you all about it, with a few pics as well!

To stay up to date with opening dates and product news you can follow LUSH on Facebook or Twitter.

Klink Awards

Calling all foodies, wine lovers, outdoor adventurers and wine farm fans! Show your love for South Africa’s winelands by voting for your favourite nominee in the country’s first ever, consumer-driven, interactive wine tourism award – the KLINK Awards.

Klink Awards

Klink Awards

The KLINK Awards have been launched by Wine Tourism South Africa, publishers of the Wine Tourism Handbook, with the objective of inspiring South Africans to explore and enjoy the experiences offered by the country’s winelands.

Hailed as the ‘Idols’ competition of wine tourism, a panel of industry-related professionals have nominated the top five finalists in each of the KLINK Awards’ fourteen categories. Now it’s up to you to go to the Wine Tourism South Africa website , Facebook or Twitter pages, see which top wineland spots are amongst the nominees and vote. What’s more, those who vote will stand the chance of winning special prizes such as wines, weekends away and restaurant vouchers.

From the 27th of August to the 24th of October you will get the chance to choose who will be crowned champion in not-so-typical categories such as:

  • The ‘Wild Card’ Award for Most Unusual Attraction on a Wine Route;
  • The ‘Family Day Out’ Award for Best Child-Friendly Venue on a Wine Farm;
  • The ‘Tread Gently’ Award for Most Green Wine Farm;
  • The ‘Delicious Deli’ Award for Best Deli on a Wine Farm;
  • The ‘Beyond Expectations’ Award for Great Food and Excellent Value;
  • And the ‘Country Comfort’ Award for Boutique Accommodation on a Wine Estate

The full list of categories is available on the website and the winners in each will be announced on the 25th of October.

Please leave a comment below this post with your details and who you are voting for and you could stand a chance of winning 1 of 5 copies of the Wine Tourism Handbook!

To help you vote here are a few of my favourites{Click on the link or button to vote}:

  • Vote for Gorgeous Bubbly and Canapes

  • Vote for Spier

  • Vote for Haute Cabrière

  • Vote for Fairview

The awards are about celebrating not just the wine made in these regions but also the way in which it is made, the people who make it, the restaurants that pair it and the landscape that gives it birth – all based on the experiences of the consumers themselves. This is a unique concept in that it is a competition for the people by the people,” concludes KLINK Awards and Wine Tourism South Africa Founder, Monika Elias.

Zara Cape Town

After much anticipation, Zara Cape Town has finally opened, much to the delight of the eager Fashionistas of Cape Town. This Friday the 17th August, Zara Cape Town opened its doors, in the V&A Waterfront and I was there, with my shopping buddy in tow, to brave the madness.

I have always been a Zara fan and have frequented their stores in the UK when we are there on holiday, so I was really looking forward to them opening right here on home soil. The store did not disappoint, although things were quite chaotic with people pouring in on Friday to get their fashion-fix!

The merchandising was top draw, with different fashion stories wonderfully displayed, giving customers ideas of what fashion ensembles could work together. Gorgeous corals, soft pastels, Chanel style jackets and lace detail were among some of my favourite looks on display – stunning for summer. Trendy animal prints and studded detail on everything from jackets to shoes, were also very popular, along with rather bright floral prints – not my favourite look.

Above are my purchases from Zara on Friday, I have been on the hunt for a blazer like the one above all winter and was delighted to find this one, part of the Zara Basics range. The coral blouse was my favourite purchase, I love the pretty neckline and it looks amazing tucked into a pair of dark denim jeans. The grey top is my first “spring/summer” buy for the season (yes I am wishing winter away); I absolutely love the plunging back! So all in all it was a rather successful shopping expedition!

Someone asked me my thoughts on Zara’s pricing and how it compares to other retail outlets, I think they are on par with local stores such as Country Road and Trennery in Woolworths but have a far more extensive range! They are certainly not cheap but in my mind worth every penny! The V&A store also has a men’s and children’s department, which my hubby and daughters are excited about exploring.

Zara Cape Town is located in the V&A Waterfront, on the ground floor opposite the Levi store, Trading Hours are 9am-9pm.

Exploring the Cape, Romantic Getaways, Travel

Hout Bay Manor

My hubby and I try to get away for a romantic weekend every few months, a tradition we started long before children, and one which we have tried to maintain ever since. This is not always easy, with all the added pressures children bring along, but in my mind it is very necessary to remain connected as a couple!

With this in mind, I have decided to start a new series on my blog, focusing on Romantic Getaways, starting in the Cape. Over the next few weeks I will be introducing you to Romantic Cape Getaways, some of which we have stayed at before and others that are on my wish-list!

My first feature is on the stunning Hout Bay Manor, situated in Hout Bay, Cape Town. The Hout Bay Manor, which was built in 1871, is renowned as one of Cape Town’s most graceful and romantic landmarks. The recently restored 5-star boutique property offers 19 individually designed en suite rooms. The decor has a distinctly African feel and the utmost care has been taken to preserve the history and heritage of this landmark, while infusing the interiors with Zulu and Xhosa chic décor to celebrate the vibrant pulse of South Africa.

Hout Bay Manor A lover’s paradise…

The hotel also boasts its own signature restaurant “PURE” , where guests can indulge in an evening of gourmet delights, accompanied by top-notch service, in a surrounding of “pure” sophistication and class. The restaurant seats 60-80 guests in style, amidst a tranquil palette of creams, whites, marble and fine art.

As well as beautiful accommodation and a world-class restaurant, the Hout Bay Manor offers guests the added luxury of indulging in much deserved pampering at The Inzolo Wellness Suite (Inzolo meaning peace, calm and tranquillity). The Spa’s philosophy is to nurture the senses and to promote the rejuvenating, healing energy of Africa in the picturesque setting of Hout Bay. Here couples can select from a menu of massages, facials and other pampering therapies in an exceptional dual treatment room.

During the warmer summer months guests can enjoy the peaceful setting and beautiful surroundings of the estate by lounging in the pool area, taking time out from the hustle and bustle of life, to relax and de-stress. The magnificent old oak trees in the tranquil setting of the Tea Garden are a perfect spot to unwind, as well as being a magical setting for an intimate wedding ceremony.

Hout Bay Manor is the perfect setting for a romantic getaway, where you will be treated to the tranquility and beauty of this gorgeous setting, the amazing attention to detail and attentive staff.

Hout Bay Harbour, Hout Bay Museum

The Hout Bay area offers a host of activities a mere 5 minutes from the hotel, with its quaint shops, bistro’s and restaurants; spend a day at the beach or visit the working fishing harbour. The area is a melting pot of history, diversity and culture. If you would like to venture further out, a drive along the breathtaking Chapman’s Peak Drive to Noordhoek and Cape Point is a must.

Hout Bay Manor has redefined the essence of hospitality and is a tribute to old and new – this is unsurpassed luxury living at its best.

Equinox Spa Cape Royale

On Tuesday morning I was treated to a wonderful spa experience at the Equinox Spa Cape Royale, in Green Point Cape Town. The timing could not have been more perfect as the girls went back to school on Tuesday as well, so it was indeed a bit of much-needed, rather self indulgent “me-time”.

The Cape Royale is situated in Green Point overlooking the grandiose Green Point Stadium and is perfectly positioned just outside the Cape Town CBD and the V&A Waterfront making it perfect for businesses and leisure travellers.

Upon arrival at the hotel I was greeted by a door man adorned in a top hat and tails and escorted through the elegant reception area, to the elevators which take you up to the Equinox Spa. The decor in the spa is magnificent, luxurious with a hint of drama. A monochromatic colour scheme is punctuated with bursts of colour. Black and white damask wallpaper adorns the walls and a beautiful ornate chandelier in the reception area gives the spa an almost ethereal feeling.

I was greeted by the friendly staff who showed me to the changing area, fully equipped with lockers and showers for guests to use. I was asked to change into a crisp white robe and shown to a waiting area, here I was offered cucumber flavoured water and a selection of healthy nibbles. My therapist Zama then took me to the treatment room which was warm and inviting. I was then treated to an hour-long hot candle massage, which is not a treatment that I have had before so I was very intrigued to experience it for the first time.

The oil that collects at the top of the burning candle, is used for the massage, it felt sublime on my skin. The hot oil is said to relieve muscle pain and stimulate blood circulation in the body. Needless to say the treatment was amazing, from the beautifully scented candle, raspberry and lavender I believe, to the gloriously warm and soothing oil the candle produces – I was in heaven! The massage itself was wonderful, with just the necessary amount of pressure, I tend to carry my stress in my neck and shoulders so there were lots of knots to work out.

 Equinox is a realm of indulgence, offering individualized professional therapies with a touch of couture elegance

I would definitely recommend a visit to the Equinox Spa and I will definitely be back there in the future to experience more of their world-class treatments. To find out more about the spa and other treatments they offer, visit their website here.

I loved the experience so much that I would like to treat one of my lucky readers to a Nimue Facial!
