Stripe Fashion Trend

The stripe fashion trend is still alive and well in 2013, yet it always amazes me how little of it I have in my own wardrobe! I know it is not one of the easiest trends to wear and much like floral, you can get it horribly wrong but if you get it right it can look so awesome! It is definitely a trend that will get you noticed. Just remember to get the balance right, especially when it comes to the size of the stripe, it is so important to find out what flatters your figure!

Stripes 2013

I have made it my mission this summer to add stripes to my wardrobe and I have already had success with a cute blue and white striped vest, from YDE, which has a bit of sparkle on the shoulder and neckline. I bought it for a “blue & white function” I attended last week and paired it with white skinnies, my blue Zara blazer and a pair of sexy heels – very chic 🙂

I thought I would share some of my favourite ways to wear stripes. How to rock stripes – from runway chic to everyday casual.

I personally love monochromatic stripes, either black and white or navy and white, which can look super sexy if you add just a pop of red to your outfit, either shoes, a bag or even a red belt as you see in the image above.

Summer Fashion Essentials

Summer-Wardrobe-Essentials9

I love summer! Especially the warmer weather, which means spending more time outdoors and more importantly changing over to your summer wardrobe!

There is always that transition time between seasons, when you are not quite sure whether you should pack your winter woolies away but once summer is here in earnest there is nothing better than swopping your winter boots for strappy sandals and a pair of jeans and a jumper for a gorgeous summer dress.

With the help of Dominique Luck I did a spring/summer wardrobe sort a few weeks back. Once we had sorted all my existing clothing and decided which items would make the donation pile, we made a list of the summer fashion essentials, which I need to  add to my wardrobe.

These are a few of the Summer Fashion Essentials, which were on the list:

Statment Trousers

  • Trousers: Pleated, printed, tapered or wide leg its all good! I find that I tend to live in jeans but often I need something a bit smarter for evening wear or I simply want to achieve a different look. Dominique’s advice is no matter what style you choose ensure they fit well and make a statement! A few great trends for this season are preppy cotton trousers or statement printed wide leg or tapered trousers. To find similar style printed trousers click here. I managed to find the pair below, from Trenery at Woolworths, which are perfect for an evening out or an event and you can wear them with heels or flats.

Black Trenery Trousers

  • The ballet pump: Pumps are essential for spring/summer, especially during the transitional weather when it is still too cold for flip flops or sandals but too warm for boots. There are so many styles and colours to choose from in the shops at the moment, we are spoilt for choice but it is also so good to have at least one neutral pair. I especially love handmade pumps like the pair above from Luli Pulani. On my search for a new pair for everyday wear, I found the pair below at Old Khaki, they are part of their Rare Earth range – they are super comfy and look great with just about any outfit!

  • Strappy sandals: The best part of summer is getting your tootsies out! Donning a pair of strappy sandals or wedges, with a bright and summery colour painted on your toes – perfect! My sandal collection is a bit sad at the moment, so I opted for a very versatile silver pair from Aldo to start off my summer sandal collection. I am still on the hunt for a sexy pair of high wedges for summer!

  • Dresses! I think I love the idea of dresses more, than dressed themselves but I think my apprehension lies in finding the “right” dress – one that makes me feel and look sexy and feminine! Last summer I found two pretty pastels lace dresses, which I loved wearing, they are both shorter in length and make me feel super sexy. If you prefer something longer then opt for a statement maxi dress, there are so many gorgeous prints available – a few new maxi dresses are definitely on my shopping list!   • Scarves!!! I love scarves, much like shoes and bags, if I walk into a shop I HAVE to look at the scarves they have on display, whether I need one or not! Florals, pastels, geometric brights it does not really matter!! Mix match and or clash – just have a bit of fun 🙂 I found the gorgeous scarf above at Old Khaki and have had so many compliments when I wear it. {I had to go back and buy the cardi, which is also from Old Khaki. I did not buy it first time around as I have quite a collection of cardi’s but coral is one of favourite colours, so I had to have it :)}

A few fashion tips to remember:

~ If you find a classic clothing item, which fits you well, then buy more than one!

~When buying a T shirt ensure that you remember the secret formula – 95% Cotton and 5%Lycra or Spandex, this will help it hold its shape and last longer.

~When buying denim, especially stretch denim, buy a size smaller because it will stretch and lets face it there is nothing worse than a saggy-butt!

~Keep a scarf in your bag or car – it will perk up any outfit and take your look from ordinary to fabulous!

There are many other items which are essential to complete your summer wardrobe but these are a few of the basics.

Items Featured: Black Trousers R599 Trenery at Woolworths, Nude Rare Earth Pumps R599 Old Khaki, Silver Thong Sandals R499 Aldo, Coral & Pink Scarf R160 Old Khaki, Coral Cardigan R350 Old Khaki, Floral Dresses bought on holiday in Thailand.

Do your dreams change?

art-supplies

This is a post I wrote last year and something that has been on my mind constantly for the past few weeks! My hubby put it very aptly the other day – it is as if you are following your dreams and headed in the right direction, when something distracts you! You see what someone else is doing and you think ooh why can’t I do that as well! Something I always say to my girls, when they are studying is – “focus girls focus”! Well it seems I need to take some of my own advice. I am not saying that you cannot diversify or change direction but you need to be careful, that what you are doing is not merely a distraction from your real plan and purpose!

This is a question I have been pondering the past few days. I think this thought process was instigated after my daughter hauled out a few of my art pieces from high school the other day and then insisted on taking them to school to show her art teacher! After I got over the feelings of complete and utter insecurity, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride. These were after all my creations and my daughter saw fit that they were good enough to share with her teacher. I am completely aware of the fact that I am “no Picasso” but I felt proud none the less!

It did, however, make me reflect back to my, somewhat naïve, yet hopeful outlook at the tender age of 15 or 16 years, when the world was my oyster. My aspirations of becoming a world-renowned fashion designer, with my own thriving chain of boutiques! At that point in my life doing anything that was creative, was my ultimate goal in life. This really got me thinking – well are my dreams still the same or have they changed and morphed into something completely different? Or are they buried beneath all the stuff life throws at you? I think that maybe I have changed, as my circumstances have changed but I think my dreams are still alive and well! If anything I think we add to these dreams as we grow and mature.

So what now? When does living your dream become impossible, well never, as far as I am concerned – if you want something badly enough you will make it happen? Luckily for me I have daughters that both enjoy fashion and have a creative flare, a husband who is extremely supportive – which I feel makes living my dream even more plausible. It may not be the exact same dream that I had all those years ago but I believe it will be better than ever because I now have special people in my life to share it with!

Style by Super Mom – Denim and Gold Part II

Denim-&-Gold-part-II-4

Denim-&-Gold-part-II3

The studded denim jacket above from Mr Price, is one of my favourite finds for Autumn/Winter this year. I think it is the vivid Indigo colour that I love so much. It looks great with your basic colours like black, white and grey but it really pops when you pair it with red. That of course is material for another post entirely!

The other thing I love about the jacket are the gold studs, I have been dying to own something with studs and I thought this was the perfect place to start!  I am wearing the Mr Price jacket over my leggings and long T from the EarthAddict Classic range.

Denim-&-Gold-part-II-5

Gold is definitely one of my most popular accessory choices for the season. It compliments black beautifully but works equally well with brights such as red and orange, which are also trending this season.

The ring above is my latest purchase from Accessorize, I have the same style ring in grey and white and I have had so much wear out of them this summer. I love chunky jewellery and I have gotten so many compliments wearing these rings that I simply could not resist the gold one! The gold bracelet it also from Accessorize.

Denim-&-Gold-part-II-8

The nail colour I chose for this outfit is Carry On by Essie, it is one of my favourite winter shades. It is so dark and sultry, without being too goth-like! I love it!

Items: Studded Denim Jacket R179 Mr Price, Raven Classic Long-sleeved T R299 Earthaddict, Raven Classic Leggings R349 Earthaddict, Gold Facet Ring R199 Accessorize , Gold Bobble Stretch Bracelet R119 Accessorize, Essie Nail Polish R99.

Look of the Week

My look of the week, chosen by one of my fashion interns, features the lovely Emma Watson. Looking super chic in her monochromatic ensemble, with über skinny black jeans and a structured white jacket. This is a style that I am particularly partial to myself. It is a very versatile look that can easily translate from a smart day look to a sexy evening outfit with the help of different accessories. You can tone this look down during the day by swopping the wedges for cute black pumps.

My favourite part of the outfit has to be her gorgeous Tom Ford wedge heels, the chunky chain detail around the ankle is bang on trend and peep-toes are also rather big this season.
