With the current designers available on their website already demonstrating emphasis on the local fashion and design industry, SassyChic welcomes two equally talented South African designers to their showcase: Silk Orchid and Spilt Milk.

Silk Orchid, by designer Anneen Henze, launched in June last year. Silk Orchid collections offer styling that is classically feminine and chic, while still maintaining an element of comfort. Women can expect functional designs with high-fashion elements that flatter and enhance their form. Anneen’s spring/summer 2013 collection features all of this season’s latest trends including Gatsby themes, pretty pastels and of course, the peplum shape.

Spilt Milk, by Alma van den Berg, is a proudly South African brand from Cape Town. Founded in 2004, this easy to wear, elegant and beautifully styled label offers unique interpretations of international trends. Spilt Milk has been showcased at various prestigious events over the past few years and was also featured on Top Billing for the Momentum Lifestyles Awards. The latest spring/summer 2013 collection, in Alma’s words, is “an outcome of my recent journey to India and an admiration of vintage silhouettes… draped saris and the naturally draped lines of wet clothing as a result of a cleansing ritual in the river influenced the use of delicate materials, which have a beautiful drape, soft touch and see-through quality such as chiffon, organza and georgettes.”

Look of the Week

My look of the week this week features a Gavin Rajah design from the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. His entire collection has been given rave reviews and you can certainly see why! This outfit was one of my favourites from the collection, although more understated than other pieces, I feel it oozes elegance and sophistication. I love his use of beautiful luxurious fabrics complemented by spectacular detail and finishes.

Michelle Ludek – MBFWC

On Friday I experienced my first “grown-up” fashion show when I attended the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Cape Town, at the CTICC. Unfortunately I left booking for the MBFWC quite late, so many of the shows were already sold out, that will definitely not happen next year! It felt wonderfully civilised sitting sipping champers before the show. My favourite designer on Friday was Michelle Ludek, so I thought I would share some of her designs with you.

Michelle Ludek – MBFWC

The Michelle Ludek Summer Collection featured at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2012, intriguingly tells two stories, Michelle says “I have tried to find a balance between creativity and reality: while each story is unique there is an uncompromising liaison in each that takes its inspiration from the Art Deco period.”

The collection features tailored pieces, fringing detail and bright striped fabrics, reminiscent of the 1920’s. Michelle’s use of geometric shapes in both the garments as well as the accessories complemented the soft billowy fabric so well.  I particularly loved the subtle colour palette used throughout the collection, with punches of Tangerines, Cobalt Blues and a unique colour, “Celery”, created by the designer. The collection is rather bold in its use of colour and form giving it a playful and rather sexy feel, which makes it perfect for a summers evening out with the gals or packed in your suitcase for an exotic vacation!

Michelle has also launched the Michelle Ludek Shoe Collection which made its debut on the runway during the show on Friday. Designed by Michelle, these hand-made shoes will be produced by Bennett and co, using only the best finishes and fabrications.

On this collection Michelle has also collaborated with up-coming creative talents, such as Bridgette de Waal, who created all the crochet and knitted pieces in the collection. As well as Belinda-Lee Ludek, who created exclusive inspired jewellery pieces to complete this summer collection.

My inspiration comes from my inherent love of nature, especially the South African landscape with its textures, organic shapes and unexpected details. I’m also inspired by the effortless flair of Europeans with their irreverent cool take on fashion. As an artist, I am always true to my impulsive and playful instincts and who I am as a woman. ` Michelle Ludek

Avant Apparel

I discovered the amazing Avant Apparel 2012 autumn/winter collection, while browsing the collections from the 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The Avant design label is the creation of a progressive design duo, Bailey Allison and Lauren Du Plessis, both Lisof graduates of 2008. It is great to see such beautiful creations that are being produced locally in South Africa!

The Avant 2012 autumn/winter collection is stunning and quite dramatic, with a monochromatic thread that runs throughout the entire collection. The garments are highly structured, with an emphasis on form-fitting design, featuring elements such as the peplum, exaggerated shoulders and oversized lapels. I love the use of sheer fabrics, which is a very popular fashion trend this season.

Avant is currently stocked at Egality in Parkhurst but they have plans to expand further in Johannesburg as well as Cape Town.
