Our décor blogger Fiona Rossiter has helpful tips to get your revamp or home décor project off the ground.

When it comes to home décor and styling, the biggest problem most people struggle with, is where to start. Although it is important to have a vision of the end product before you start, home décor is a process and you will probably change your mind along the way.

I do find it useful to decide on a colour scheme before you start your project. I find this helps inspire the rest of the creative process. I have put together a list of places that I find helpful when looking for home décor inspiration and ideas.

Interior or décor magazines

Home Decor Inspiration

You will be amazed at the great inspiration you will find in magazines. You will get the inside scoop on what’s new and trending on the décor scene, as well as inspiring spaces, for you to gather ideas to use when decorating your space.

If you see articles or ideas you like but are not ready to implement yet either keep the magazine for future reference or cut out the relevant pages and create a file for later reference.

So if you are starting out on a revamp of your current space or building and need to decorate, this is a great place to start.

Online

Home Decor Inspiration

There are a great many online portals to find heaps of inspiration for interior decorating. One of my favourites’ is Pinterest, which is an online virtual pin board. I spend many hours sifting through countless images of homes and décor, pinning them for future reference. I used Pinterest quite a bit when we recently revamped our kitchen. So whether it is a bedroom or outdoor space you are needing ideas for, you will find many hours of inspiration at your fingertips!

Art

You can pull colours and textures from art you already have in your home or buy something new and use that as a base for your décor inspiration. Replicate these colours or textures in your soft furnishings such as scatter cushions or throws etc. You can also apply this principle to the upholstery of a couch or single chair, using both texture and colour to influence fabric choice. Depending on the type of art i.e. contemporary, classic or romantic, you can also bring many of these moods into your overall theme.

Household Items

Home Decor Inspiration

Another great way to start a decorating project is to use everyday items as your muse. When we revamped our kitchen I used items such as espresso cups and my Kitchen Aid Mixer to get my creative juices flowing. We went with accent colours in red and French blue or aqua which are colours that complement each other beautifully and pop against the neutral appliances and wall covering we choose.

You can also use items such as a vase, a picture frame, tea towels or soft furnishings, to help you formulate design ideas.

Nature

Home Decor Inspiration

Nature is a good place to start when looking at colour palettes, to find out which colours complement each other and exist in harmony, in nature. You can then implement these colours into your interior space or use them as inspiration.

Incorporating organic textures and patterns from nature into your interior decorating can be a fun way to bring dimension to your décor and create a unique, more unusual space.

Home Decor Inspiration

We love wood, especially raw wood and have tried to introduce quite a few décor pieces into our living space. When we revamped our kitchen recently, I opted for wood counter tops as opposed to granite. Both of these materials are organic but I felt wood, would create a softer overall feel in the kitchen.

The main thing to remember when decorating your space is “enjoy the process!” Have a bit of fun with your design choices, add some colour to the space. Find decor inspiration all around you, even in nature. Make the space inspirational and unique, a place you can enjoy spending time in.
