Parenthood

Today I am reminded of the beauty in the world and am thankful for the wonderful life I have. I am also incredibly grateful to be sharing my journey in life and parenthood with the best person ever!

We are in the constant battle of keeping ourselves humble and not having an ungrateful attitude. This is something we try very hard to impart to our children, especially living in South Africa surrounded by poverty and inequality. The biggest problem is that the media portrays a very different message – one of ‘want and greed, 6’ and our children are drawn into this. I do feel that as parents we all want what is best for our children and to be able to give them the best of everything. My question is how do you do this and not turn them into spoilt brats in the process?

Our girls are nine and six years old and the hardest part of seeing them growing up is watching our younger daughter expect to be her siblings equal despite their difference in age. This makes it very difficult to not allow them to become too competitive and to maintain a sense of equality in the household. I do believe a certain amount of competition is healthy but so is acceptance of themselves and of each other.

So I guess in the end, if we can teach our children to love themselves and respect those around them we are doing a good job.
