Natural Herbs and Spices

My style of cooking is quite relaxed. More of throw things in a pot and see how they turn out kind of vibe! I am not much of a recipe follower. On occasion, however, I use a recipe as a guideline, unless I am baking that is – then its recipe all the way! I have quite a well-stocked pantry of spices but always welcome trying new products! A while back Naturals Herbs and Spices sent me a fantastic gift pack filled. It contained a selection of their fantastic herbs and spices.

Natural Herbs and Spices

Natural Herbs and Spices

Regardless of whether you use a recipe, one of the most important elements of cooking any dish is seasoning. It is also vital to the balance of flavours. I always say, Taste, Taste, Taste! Remeber to keep tasting as you cook and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

Any home cook, worth their salt{pardon the pun}, should have a broad selection of herbs and spices at the ready when cooking. Fresh herbs and spices are first prize. Dried herbs and spices will work as well as long they are fresh. Everyone’s taste differs but in my opinion there is nothing worse than bland, under-seasoned food.

What Makes Natural Herbs and Spices Stand Out

There are so many brands of herbs and spices on the market, so what makes Natural Herbs and Spices stand out from the crowd? It is quite simple. They provide an extensive range of 100% natural, steam pasteurised, preservative and GMO-free, herbs and spices! While most herbs and spices sold in mass markets, such as the United States, are sterilised using ETO (Ethylene Oxide) or irradiated, and are banned in some countries. As a result, spices may be contaminated with pesticide residues and genetically modified ingredients.

“Natural’s range is manufactured in a modern, BRC-accredited factory, where our products are exported to some of the most quality-conscious markets in the world. Markets which include Japan, Australia and the USA. Some European markets demand a competitive offering, which Natural has more than proved that it is able to meet.” ~ Gary Neill, Director for Natural Herbs and Spices.

Using German-designed, Swedish manufactured equipment, hundreds of tonnes of spice is dry steamed to a high pressure and moderated overheat. This steam-sterilised process ensures that the raw product is depleted of microbes, but still retains its natural colour, flavour and nutrients. No genetically modified organisms or methods are used during the farming of Natural’s ingredients. Their products are also preservatives, colourant and monosodium glutamate (MSG), free.

My Verdict

I have enjoyed my selection of Natural Herbs and Spices! I am a bit of a salt freak{yes I know too much is bad for you!} and love the Natural Himalayan Salt Grinder – Himalayan salt is much better for you than regular table salt, not only is it unrefined but it also contains the full spectrum of beneficial minerals and trace elements! So this will be something I will be using going forward. The Gourmet Peppercorns are excellent as well, and the Everyday grinder is so handy as it contains sea salt, whole black pepper, garlic, parsley and origanum, which is perfect for your “every day”, basic seasoning requirements.

Health Benefits

Not only do herbs and spices add flavour to your meals but they also provide certain health benefits:

  • Coriander has a stimulating effect on the endocrine system, stimulating the production of insulin, which results in increased insulin in the blood; aiding with proper assimilation and the absorption of sugar, and lowering the blood sugar level;
  • Cumin has antiseptic properties that assist in boosting one’s immune system. Cumin is also a source of iron and assists with the control of indigestion;
  • Bay leaves traditionally as an anti-inflammatory, especially for arthritis, are also believed to be a remedy for upset stomachs and other digestive problems. The leaf contains enzymes that can break down protein and promote digestion;
  • Cayenne pepper increases one’s metabolism. It is also great for the stomach and intestinal tract, as it stimulates the peristaltic motion of the intestines;
  • Cinnamon has properties that help with insulin resistance, it also makes a great natural disinfectant. Cinnamon may keep one alert and has antioxidant properties; and
  • Black Pepper is a powerful antioxidant.

The Natural Herbs and Spices range consists of 29 grinders, six salt seasonings, 12 sachet seasonings (including pesto’s and bread dippers), 27 herbs and blended spices, and ceramic grinder options (which last up to 10 times longer).

For the full range herbs and spices visit the Naturals Herbs and Spices website. They are available through all major retail outlets, including Pick ‘n Pay, Spar, and Dis-Chem.
