The Robertson Wine Valley is very much unchartered territory for me. On a recent trip to the area with my daughter, I managed to do a bit more exploring. A farm I have been dying to visit is Zandvliet and more especially their stunning new tasting room, Kalkveld Lounge.
Kalkveld Lounge Zandvliet
Zandvliet Wine Estate is also known to many as the “home of Shiraz”, as they were one of the first wineries in South Africa to bottle Shiraz.
Kalkveld Lounge at Zandvliet draws inspiration from their flagship Kalkvliet Shiraz, as well as from the estate itself. Philip Pikus of Cape Town is the design-mind behind this beautiful new space. His idea was to marry the old with the new and create a tasting room which harmoniously integrates modern interior concepts, with old repurposed design elements.
As well as the stunning new tasting room, Zandvliet has opened an exhibition area below the lounge, which at the time was showcasing a fabulous Solo Photographic Exhibition by Lara Perlman.
Zandvliet Clemgold Pairing
Citrus is one of my favourite flavours, which made this experience even more exciting. We started the pairing with the Estate Chardonnay and Clemgold Marmalade, next was the Kalkveld Shiraz with Smooth Dark Chocolate. The spicy Shiraz was a perfect match for the dark chocolate, with notes of zesty citrus.
We then moved – on to the Vintage Liqueur Wine and Spicy Panforte – this was my favourite combination of flavours. Last but not least was the Muscat and Biscotti, which would be the perfect way to round off a meal.
Keeping it all things citrus, I also had a sneaky taste of their Clemgold Gin. I loved it so much I bought a bottle to take home!
What better way to end a wonderful wine tasting experience than with a delicious Cheese and Charcuterie platter, which included warm, freshly baked bread.
Wine Experiences
The Citrus & Wine Pairing is R65 per person. Another experience I am keen to try is the Tutored Wine Blending, which is R100 per person. The Kalkveld Lounge tasting room is open Monday – Friday: 09h00 – 17h00 and Saturdays & Public Holidays: 10h00 – 17h00 (Closed on Sundays, Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day).
