Protea Range from Anthonij Rupert Wine

The Protea range, from Anthonij Rupert Wine, is a firm favourite in our home. Both the Sauvignon and Rosé are fantastic, everyday drinking options, that won’t break the budget.

Protea Range

Protea Range

Anthonij Rupert Wine in Franschhoek produces a collection of seven wines which recognises the flower species – the Protea. The Protea is distinctive of the Cape Floristic region, the world’s smallest yet most abundant floristic region.

The Protea range marries the old with the new. Bringing the heritage of the vines, together with distinctive packaging designs.

The Wine

Protea Range from Anthonij Rupert Wine

Wines in the range include a Rosé, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinot Grigio. The range is available directly from the estate or select specialist wine shops, as well as retail outlets nationwide. White wines, including the Rosé retail between R50 and R60 per bottle. Reds in the range, retail between R60 and R70 per bottle.

As I mentioned previously, the Sauvignon Blanc and the Rosé are two of our favourites from the range. Below you will find my thoughts on the wine, winemaker’s tasting notes, as well as my recommendations for wine and food pairings.

2017 Protea Rosé

The Protea Rosé is an ideal summer wine, which emulates the classic rosés typically found in the southern coastal regions of France. It is crisp and dry, with wonderful citrus notes. It is my wine of choice when I eat a Caesar salad, and it also pairs particularly well with sushi.

Tasting notes: Pale blush-pink colour, with gentle aromas of nectarine and lemon zest. Tangy entry to the mouth with lemon and citrus zest flavour. Juicy succulence with more stonefruit apparent, along with light fruity hints of plum and red cherry. A lively, vibrant mouthful which finishes nicely dry. An ideal summertime sipper.

2017 Sauvignon Blanc

Protea Range

The Protea Sauvignon Blanc is another excellent Summer Wine choice. This Sauvignon Blanc has a well-balanced structure, with zingy fruitiness and a refreshing acidity and a crisp finish. It is exceptionally quaffable on its own but will pair well with seafood dishes, especially sushi or light chicken dishes.

Tasting notes: Fresh and lively with hints of ripe gooseberry and white pear leading the bouquet. Tropical flavours abound on the palate with a fresh acidity supporting the finish into a lingering structure and dry finish.

The Bottle

As well as fantastic, affordable wine and gorgeous bottle design, I love the brand’s eco-friendly angle. The Protea bottles, all depicting an attractive floral design representing the Protea family, have been created with the intention of upcycling once empty. They are perfect for serving olive oil or Balsamic vinegar and as you can see make a charming candle holder.

Another great plus is the Helix closure. This unique, ergonomically designed cork combines the tradition of cork and provides a user-friendly, re-sealable closure.
