Kitchen Essentials Oryx Braai Salt

I am always trying new products in my kitchen, some good, some so-so, and others terrible. The “keepers” take pride of place on my kitchen shelves, thus becoming essentials. This sparked the idea of starting a new series and sharing a few of my finds with you. The first contender in my Kitchen Essentials series is the new Oryx Braai Salt.

Oryx Braai Salt

Oryx Braai Salt

The creator of the new Oryx Desert Salt, braai salt recipe, is none other than one of South Africa’s Top Chefs, Jackie Cameron. Cameron’s innovative recipe uses fresh ingredients, which are freeze-dried, roasted and ground. A unique process for getting the best flavour out of the ingredients.

What is Inside

Oryx Braai Salt

Oryx’s Braai Salt is an aromatic blend of natural, sun-dried Oryx Desert Salt, garlic, sun-dried tomato, masala, coriander, rosemary, ginger, black pepper, cinnamon, turmeric, cumin, allspice, paprika, with a dash of sugar.

A huge plus in my books is that Oryx Braai Salt, is entirely natural, with no artificial flavourings. You won’t find any hidden nasties like MSG, fillers, irradiated herbs and spices or preservatives. As it is an all-natural product, there will be slight variations in colour and texture.

Taste

I love adding loads of flavour to my recipes, there is nothing worse than bland under-seasoned food. You can expect a hint of heat from the salt, which I would classify as spicy rather than hot. The spices and herbs work in perfect harmony, with no one element stealing the show.

Oryx Braai Salt

As the name suggests, the Oryx Braai Salt is the perfect partner for your braai, whether you are cooking meat, chicken or fish. I have also found it great for adding a bit of a kick to my oven roasted potato wedges and seasoning veggies. Simple sprinkle liberally over your food, no grinding required and you are on your way to a fantastic flavour-packed meal.

The Oryx Brand

Another factor which makes this product a winner is its recyclable glass bottle, which is reusable as you can buy a refill pack. As well as sustainability, Oryx also believes in giving back. For every bag of salt sold, they donate a percentage of sales, to the Khomani San and Mier communities, who own !Xaus Lodge in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in the Kalahari Desert.

Price & Stockist

The Oryx Desert Salt Braai Shaker is R37.99 (70g), and the Refill is R49.75 (125g). They are both available at Pick ‘n Pay Stores.
