DNA Testing – My DNAlysis experience

Have you ever considered DNA testing? I recently decided to take the plunge and had mine tested through DNAlysis. The process was extremely straightforward, and the results fascinating.

DNAlysis DNA Testing

DNA testing is something I have been interested in doing for quite a while now, which is why I was very excited when DNAlysis approached me to try out their service. They are one of South Africa’s premier genetic testing laboratories offering an innovative approach to genetic testing. A person’s genes determine everything about them, from their eye colour to their risk for certain diseases.

The main aim of this type of DNA Testing is to aid medical practitioners in providing patients with personalised treatments, customised for the individual. DNAlysis tests, performed by highly trained medical practitioners, help give a greater understanding of what patients need for optimal health and nutrition. The spectrum of genetic qualities tested includes Weight Management, Chronic disease risk management, Cognitive health and mood disorders, Athletic performance and recovery requirements from high-intensity exercise.

The DNA Testing Process

The testing process, as I mentioned, is extremely straightforward. I was sent a DNA Testing kit via courier, which consisted of a saliva swab test, labels and a consent form. I performed the test early morning, before eating or drinking. All that is required is to swap the inside of each cheek for the minimum of one minute.

Once done, you complete a label with your details, stick it on the tube and send the kit back to the testing centre via courier. It is that simple, no blood and no needles. The test is however time-sensitive, so you need to arrange collection ahead of time.

My Results

I had a DNA Health and Diet test done. The results were fascinating. Something to note – you do not provide any medical or personal details before going through the process; your results are based solely on the test. Once my results were processed, Jessica from DNAlysis Skyped me to discuss my results in detail.

DNA Health Test

The DNA Health Test can help identify any potential lifestyle diseases, as well as giving you insights to help optimise your health and wellbeing. Genes tested can help detect diseases such as cholesterol, risk of heart disease, bone health, the risk for osteoporosis, detoxification, inflammation and oxidative stress. In addition, it tests Insulin Sensitivity, risk of diabetes, Food Responsiveness; lactose intolerance, caffeine processing, salt sensitivity, as well as blood pressure and iron overload disorders.

Fortunately, the majority of my results were positive, and ultimately, I have “good genes”. I do, however, have “detoxification” issues, which although not severe, need to be addressed. In essence, my body struggles to eliminate certain harmful substances. The main things I can do as preventative measures are to decrease my exposure to toxins, such as preservatives, chargrilled meats, pesticides etc. I also need to increase my intake of cruciferous and allium vegetables.

Another moderate health issue identified by the test is Oxidative Stress, which can mean excessive amounts of free radicals in my system. Free radicals can damage cells in the body and cause premature ageing and illness. I can help lessen the effect of free radicals by eating more fruit and vegetables, which are rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients.

Something I have struggled with, since an infant, is lactose intolerance, which was confirmed by the test. Dairy has never agreed with me, especially full-cream anything. For this reason, a few months ago, I switched to almond milk in my coffee. For the rest, I steer clear of meals containing full-fat dairy and try to use alternatives such as coconut milk or cream.

DNA Diet Test

I have always believed that Weight management and healthy eating are integral to long-term health and wellbeing. In addition, bad eating habits can result in poor health and various chronic diseases. The thing is there is no one approach or diet that suits everyone, which is why DNA Diet testing can help identify the best choices for you.

Several gene variations that impact metabolism, absorption and storage of fats and carbohydrates, are tested. In particular, how your genetic profile affects your response to effective healthy eating plans.

Plant-based diet

A bit of a shocker for me is that I have actually been following the incorrect diet. Although I eat healthy foods and watch my calorie intake, my weight has not budged over the past year despite my best efforts. I should be following a Meditteranean Diet, which is more plant-based, light in meat and saturated fats. Jessica also stressed how important it is to include things like avocados and oily fish in my eating plan. I should also avoid things like butter and instead opt for olive oil.

Something else I need to be aware of is my portion control, as well as snacking in between meals. My approach to eating should be more mindful and not eating on the run – sometimes easier said than done!

As far as exercise goes, I need to include frequent, high-intensity activities in my routine, to help me maintain a healthy weight.

In Conclusion

I am so happy I decided to go ahead with DNA Testing as it has confirmed quite a few things I suspected about my health and well-being. It has also highlighted a few things about my diet and health, which I can address by making minor lifestyle changes.
