Gourmet Boerie launches in South Africa

As with braaing, boerewors is part of our National Heritage and something everyone in South Africa is familiar with! Well you will be happy to know that “boerewors” is getting a facelift.

The Boerie is coming! It is no secret that Boerewors is one of the most renowned traditional dishes in the South African cuisine. Whether you braai it with your chops, steam it with mash and veggies or eat it on your meaty pizza, every South African loves a good boerie – especially with an ice-cold Craft Beer! Like most good things, the traditional boerie is due for an upgrade and thus a diverse group of top South African entrepreneurs would like to introduce – GOURMET BOERIE.

The concept behind Gourmet Boerie is all about the traditional Boerewors roll and Craft Beer, with a touch of pizzazz! It boasts a proudly South African stamp, with every item in-store produced locally by South Africans in South Africa. Ingredients have been sourced from local suppliers, all menu items are manufactured in SA and all merchandise and staff uniforms are made from native hemp – even the furniture has been created by a local designer. The three Craft Beers – Jack Black, Darling Brew and Devils Peak – are pumped from a cold room on site, ensuring ever-cold beer.  Local SAB beer, as well as ciders and spritzers for the ladies, are also available.

 We are a  Proudly South African business that sells an iconic South African brand in a really fun, sexy and creative space that will be appealing to all South Africans and tourists alike,” pronounces Craig Bright, co-founder of Gourmet Boerie and owner of Rocking the Daisies.

What is on the menu you may ask? Well Silwood-trained, Kate Marek, is taking the reins and will be running the kitchen. Her culinary experience reaches as far as, vocations in food capitals of the world, such as London and Melbourne. Marek’s creations for Gourmet Boerie include The Breakfast Boerie, The Gorgonzola, The Hangover, The Herbiwors, and even a Kiddies Boerie. Gourmet Boerie has something for everyone! Customers have the choice between traditional, lamb, chicken or vegetarian boerewors, with an Ostrich boerewors in the pipeline. All boeries are available on a selection of different bread rolls. For those of us with a sweet tooth they offer traditional South African desserts such as Koeksisters, Milk Tart and Malva Pudding.

As if that isn’t a big enough bite to chew, the Gourmet Boerie team has also developed their very own, unique boerewors recipe, available to buy and braai in the comfort of your own home – along with incredibly delicious sauces to complement each dish. Furthermore, for sport enthusiasts, there will be two 53” high definition plasma screens, crafting a place where local is truly lekker! It’s the ultimate spot for South Africans to enjoy their own culture cuisine with free WiFi and food for thought while also introducing newcomers to this world-famous hospitality.

Gourmet Boerie will be retailing its succulent boerewors and Craft Beers to the public as from October 2012.You can find them at Buitenkloof Studios on the corner of Buitensingel and Kloof Street. All boeries are available as sit down or takeaway – if you don’t have time to sit down and dine, grab a boerie on the run!

Not Spur AGAIN! There are plenty of places in Cape Town that are willing to give your bambino crayons, a balloon and energy sucking jungle gym. It’s about time you give yourself a break from those easy-to-clean brown pleather seats and see how it’s done at other child friendly restaurants in Cape Town.

Primi Pods

Primi Piatti – Primi Pods rocks the socks off of family restaurants. Interactive, colourful, educational – the perfect docking station for your kids. The Primi Pods section can be recognised by its bold splash of colours and the mosaic counter in front of a pizza station. Primi has caregivers on hand to teach your kids how to make pizzas and how to bake biscuits while you settle down to a glass of red and browse the extensive, mouth-watering menu. What’s nice about the Primi Pods section is that it is in plain view of the rest of the child friendly restaurant so you can keep a loving eye on your kids if you want to.

Primi Piatti outlets that have Primi Pods sections can be found in Constantia, Cavendish, Sea Point, Camps Bay, V&A Waterfront, Canal Walk, Somerset West, and Willowbridge Table View. To sweeten the deal even further they often has great specials – check out the latest Primi Piatti specials here.

Scallywags Play Café

You’re hungry and little Johnny is bored and can’t sit still. Time for Scallywags Play Café! This café is one of the best child friendly restaurants in Cape Town because it is an absolute fantasy play land for children and their menu options are all made from organic and free-range products. Family dining with a conscience.

Scallywags has so much to offer children: trains that smoke, a beautiful life-size gingerbread house, climbing walls, baby-pen, boys corner, dress-ups, jumping castle, ball pool and slide. They even have flying butterflies and dragon flies with glitter fairies for the girls, and for the boys, spiders and spider webs.

While little Johnny gets rid of some of his energy (please, oh, please) you can sit down and browse the menu at this family friendly restaurant in Cape Town – Rosmead Avenue, Kenilworth. Finally a break.

Moyo

What a great family outing. It’s hard to say whether you or your child will end up enjoying the experience more. Moyo in Spier is an elegant child friendly restaurant in Cape Town with a spicy African flair. Interactive activities like face painting, hand washing and traditional dance entertainment makes for a truly enjoyable evening for the whole family. Moyo has large, open spaces, gorgeous pathways and gets its cosy atmosphere from the enormous trees, interesting artistic structures and the winding pathways flanked by greenery. Book a table in the tree-tops and enjoy a fun family outing that fills the gap.

Deer Park Café

Described as comfy and casual, this family friendly restaurant in Cape Town, Vredehoek, serves breakfasts, lunches and light meals. Its appeal is that it is situated right next to a fenced off child friendly park, so you don’t have to worry about your child running off, although keeping half an eye on them is always recommended and inevitable from a caring parent.

The menu is super child friendly with fun options like a ‘baby cappuccino’ which is frothed milk with sprinkles on top. Heaven only knows that the last thing your child needs is caffeine!

La Cabane

La Cabane in Hout Bay is a restaurant, tea room and playground. The restaurant gives off a home-style family atmosphere, the team room is much the same and the playground is a monster fort of excitement for anyone not-tall-enough-to-ride-this-ride. Children love it!

La Cabane wanted to make sure that their family friendly restaurant in Cape Town was a place where parents and children can both enjoy themselves to the nth degree. With 4 state of the art 40″ LCD televisions, moms and dads can enjoy watching rugby/tennis, sipping on a brewsky/tea while the kids let their imaginations run wild in the La Cabane playground.

Joostenberg

Country style cooking and large open spaces for kids to play. This family friendly restaurant in Cape Town is situated off the N1 in Muldersvlei. In winter, the huge fireplace roars with life and warms little bodies while they eat. In summer, the shaded stoep provides a lovely spot for an afternoon meal.

Kids can enjoy horse and wagon rides, or a ride on a pony. There is also a large jungle gym and stretches of lawn where children can happily play while parents enjoy a hearty meal.

Blue Water Café

This family friendly restaurant is nestled in Kommetjie’s super child friendly Imhoff Farm. Make sure you arrive half an hour before you plan to eat as you’re met by CO2 emitting camels waiting to be ridden on the way into Imhoff Farm. Kids will also love the Higgeldy Piggeldy Farm right next door to Blue Water Café, where friendly rabbits, sheep, goats, pigs, ducks, geese, chickens, guinea pigs and a pony are waiting to meet them. There is also a snake park within Imhoff – worth a visit if your children are eager to see slithering reptiles in a safe environment.

When it’s time to eat, your family can sit down to the freshest ingredients; the chef whips up New Cape style food and scrumptious pizzas baked in a wood fired oven. When it’s time to play, your kids can run around the safe, enclosed garden and jungle gym. A great excursion for the whole family.

With these child friendly restaurants in Cape Town you can enjoy good quality food, a lovely setting and a dose of relaxation knowing that while your child is not at the table, the manager isn’t giving them an espresso and a free kitten.

The Foodbarn Noordhoek Village

For those of you who don’t know me I am a local Cape Town girl who likes to live the simple life but enjoys the finer things life has to offer. I love food and it has always been an important part of my life and Cape Town certainly has a great deal to offer gastronomically. Recently I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to interview a local food legend, certainly in our quiet seaside suburb of Noordhoek, not to mention the greater foodie community, Franck Dangereux.

Although now a local man Franck was born in France (Cannes). He grew up in a family where, despite not  being foodies themselves, food and eating was always at the heart of the home. In Franck’s words, his passion for cooking was “born out of a love of eating”. Languishing family feasts were always a strong tradition and trips to the local markets, a childhood adventure. Franck does feel that in modern society we might be in danger of missing these fantastic opportunities, of families being united by sharing in delicious food and making precious memories.

He started cooking at the age of 14 and began studying at the Nice Hotel School, the following year. By the age of 18 Franck was working in 3 Michelin Star restaurants in Paris. In 1987 while on holiday, Franck visited South Africa for the first time, only to fall in love with this magnificent country. He also happened to meet up with a local South African, Pete de Bruin, and despite their language barrier, (aided by the power of Tequila) they formed a friendship that would ultimately see them reunited through a joint vision in the future.

After a few more years spent honing his skills aboard, Franck officially immigrated to South Africa and made Cape Town his home. His first job in Cape Town was working for Franck Swainston at the esteemed Constantia Uitsig, where he worked as Head Chef for two years. In 1996, after taking some time off from the intensity of the kitchen, Franck returned to the gastronomic world and started La Colombe. He was given carte blanche to create a lavish fine dining experience, which would go on to achieve numerous accolades, including being voted as one of the top 50 Restaurants in the World in 2006.

A few years later, after discovering that the Noordhoek Farm Stall was up for sale, Franck and Pete realised the dream that their shared passion for food had ignited years previously, and The Foodbarn was officially born.

As a local Noordhoek – lass I have had the opportunity of eating at The Foodbarn, Noordhoek Village, many times, but what you may ask, is so special about this restaurant? The vision that Franck had for this eatery was to have a fine dining experience with great food and wine but a relaxed ambience and The Foodbarn certainly lives up to this expectation. Patrons are treated to a wonderful dining experience and great seasonal specials.

Franck believes that cooking is an experience that should excite all your senses, that food should be both visually appealing as well as taste good, with sauces being his forte, from a simple vinaigrette to a fragrantly spiced jus. Wine is also an integral part of your dining experience at The Foodbarn, with food and wine pairing recommendations being a feature of their menu.

Together Franck and Pete run The Foodbarn, Franck bringing his exceptional food skills and Pete his astute business knowledge, from years spent working in the corporate world. Not to forget Pete’s role of as the charming host at the Foodbarn, as well as looking his “baby” The Foodbarn Deli & Tapas, a more relaxed and rustic eatery. The Foodbarn Noordhoek Village is currently running a seasonal special, where diners can enjoy 50% off food ordered from the restaurant ala carte menu, Monday to Friday, lunches only. A few days ago I was lucky enough to be invited to photograph and sample two of these amazing dishes. The food did indeed taste as good as it looked! Below you will see the two dishes which I tasted and I would highly recommend that you visit The Foodbarn. (See the bottom of the page for contact details)

The 1st Dish was De-shelled prawns tempura served on confied tomato, aubergine and avo tian, finished with a chilli & red pepper syrup and basil salsa. “this dish was delicious, the tempura prawns(one of my favourite things to eat) where lovely and juicy, with a light-crispy exterior – balanced by cool and refreshing tangy tomato & red pepper flavours, with a hint of chilli.”

The 2nd dish was Rack of Karoo lamb roasted in a bread crust, served with a chickpea “panisse”, finished with harissa mayo and Moroccan spices scented jus. “the lamb was perfectly cooked, medium rare the way I like it, there was a slight heat from the harissa mayo and the rich intense jus complimented the dish beautifully.”

I would just like to thank Franck and Pete for this great opportunity and for bringing such a great dining experience to the area! I wish them continued success with both of their restaurants!
