Jan Harmsgat Country House Historic Gem

You may recall me sharing about a recent trip to the Robertson Wine Valley and a few of the wonderful experiences we had. During our trip, we spent two nights at the charming Jan Harmsgat Country House.

Jan Harmsgat Country House

Jan Harmsgat Country House, is a two-hour drive from Cape Town on the R60 highway, off the N2. It is the ideal spot to spend a few days and explore more of the surrounding areas such as Swellendam, Robertson and Bonnievale. This historic gem offers 5-Star Accommodation,  a Fine-dining Restaurant, as well as wine tasting.

Accommodation

Original meter thick walls and Yellowwood fittings provide an authentic country feel. Guests can truly experience the ambience of a charming, old world, country setting.

The ten beautifully decorated rooms, located in three different buildings, offer Double, Twin & Family accommodation. There is also a romantic honeymoon suite. Each room has a flat screen TV, with a selected DSTV package, plus free Wi-Fi.

The old world charm continues in the bathrooms, with slight modern touches. You can pamper yourself with wonderful Rain Africa products, while you soak away your cares in a steaming hot bath.

It was freezing during our stay, with temperatures dropping down to 0°c but our room was wonderfully toasty and warm.

Just Amy Restaurant

We enjoyed Breakfast and Dinner at Just Amy Restaurant. Breakfast included a fresh fruit parfait, topped with homemade muesli and yoghurt. Also on offer were croissants, as well as a selection of cold meats, salmon and cheese. We then had the option of a hot breakfast, along with freshly squeezed juice and coffee.

The lunch and dinner menu changes according to the fresh produce available from the farm garden. Dishes on offer include rack of lamb, duck, aged beef fillet, or their famous kudu fillet. All pasta is handmade, and salad ingredients are picked fresh from the garden.

We enjoyed a three-course dinner during our stay, and all I can say is make sure that you are hungry because portions are generous and the food is delicious!

If you still have space left, dessert is a must. A speciality of the restaurant is their pecan pie, made from organically grown pecans from the farm and topped with homemade ice cream.

Wine Tasting

The current JHG Collection is the farm’s fourth vintage. They only create single-block wines, being the smallest production unit for vineyards and which may not exceed six hectares per cultivar.

JHG, situated on the southern most tip of the Robertson Wine Valley, at the foothills of the Langeberg Mountains, benefits from both the dry climate of the Little Karoo, as well as the cool Mediterranean climate from the coast.

We enjoyed a fantastic 4 x 4 backland drive, where we got to see more of the working parts of the farm, as well as spotting Black Wildebeest. The views were spectacular.
