My Top 4 Tips for Raising Girls

As a mom of two girls, one rapidly approaching her teens and the other puberty, I am often asked how I handle all the drama, that these tender years can bring with them. Well here are a few pearls of wisdom, things that I have learnt along the way – some lessons more painful than others!

  • There comes a point in your parenting journey, especially as a mom of girls and tweens or teens, when you are going to have to say no, to things they would like or would like to do. You may very well have to disappoint your children but part of your job, as a parent, is to protect and guide them! Especially in their teenage years, children need to understand what is appropriate and what is not! That a skirt may be way too short and that their make-up is too heavy, you have to teach them right from wrong. I think this is sometimes harder for the parent than the child because you do not want to come across as the “dragon mom” but at the same time, “rather safe than sorry”. What you have to understand, is that children will try to push boundaries and assert themselves, which at times means standing your ground and not giving in.
  • You are going to have to learn to share – everything! Clothing, makeup, shoes, even your husband – a good Father Daughter relationship is so important! The Barney saying “sharing is caring” comes to mind but there is a limit to everything! I grew up with a younger brother, so I never had to go hunting for my stuff. As a result, I am not used to sharing! This has been a huge learing curve for me. I think the important lesson here is to teach your children about personal space and how to respect yours and maintain theirs – in other words “to stay out of your stuff!”
  • There may be times when your girls make you feel insecure, intimidated and even a tad jealous {I can see a few eyebrows being raised!}. This is not necessarily a bad thing but it will bring you to the realisation that you are indeed human! It can be tough when they fit into that size 32 that is a long-lost memory for you! ;-), or when they achieve that A Grade that you always wished you could growing up. The important thing is to talk about your feelings, not let them overwhelm you and try to not live vicariously through your children – get your own “life”!
  • It is important, actually vitally important, to always maintain an open, honest relationship with your children – girls need to talk even if they say they don’t! It does not always have to be a world-changing, deep, meaningful conversation – just a “Hi how are you doing?” is enough sometimes! It often feels like you are unable to “get through” to your children but you can be assured that even if they do not appear to be listening to you, they are “hearing” you. So do not ever give up, keep communicating and you will get through to them!

Sleep Wizz Competition

I am sure as moms you have tried it all when it comes to soothing your baby, either trying to get them to sleep or simply calming a cranky baby. I found one thing that always worked for me when trying to calm my girls was music. I played music for them long before they were born and have very vivid memories of lagging a CD player everywhere we went, so that they would not be without their music!

Needless to say technology has moved on somewhat since then and Majors for minors have recently released a collection of music apps called Sleep Wizzz. These amazing apps are on hand no matter where you are: in the car, out at friends or travelling the world!

Sleep Wizzz is a collection of 3 apps designed to help the parent in forming a progressive calming environment to stimulate the baby or infant to a state of calm and eventually sleep. The music is designed with a specific tempo to echo the rhythm in the brain and the frequencies are in line with those of the sounds of the ocean or pink noise.”

The three apps are called Bedtime, Playtime and Storytime.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting

On thursday I was invited to attend the press screening of What to Expect When You’re Expecting, which is soon to be released in cinemas. I was really looking forward to seeing this movie as it promised to be a heart warming big screen comedy; I love a film that is both funny and meaningful.

The film is based on the New York Times bestseller of the same name, What to Expect When You’re Expecting. It tackles a variety of preconceived ideas that people have regarding pregnancy and parenthood. Although light-hearted, the film also focuses on the more emotional aspects of being a parent-to-be. The basic plot follows the lives of five couples, as they each prepare for the responsibilities of parenthood. Each of the couples are representative of possible pre-parenthood situations, which allows most viewers to connect with a few of the various stories portrayed. As a mother, having gone through two pregnancies myself, I could certainly relate to quite a few of the situations in the film.

The  star-studded cast all deliver great performances but my favourite character in the film is Wendy, played by Elizabeth Banks. Wendy is a baby-crazy author who when faced with the reality of her own pregnancy realises that it is not all that the books and magazines portray it to be! She is constantly searching for the “glow” that pregnancy promises to bring.

Another actor that stands out is Chris Rock, who is the leader of “the dudes group”{the dads}, who in my opinion brings the true element of comedy to the film. The dads agree that ‘whatever is discussed in dudes group stays in dudes group’ and they have a strict policy of no judgement! The film although funny is definitely not a side-splitting comedy but rather a romantic film peppered with humorous moments.

Ultimately the film is about understanding that no matter what you plan for, life (and especially parenthood) doesn’t always deliver what you expect.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting is due to be released in cinemas on the 15th June 2012.

My Top 4 Pregnancy Tips

Although pregnancy may be a bit of a distant memory for me now, I thought I would share My Top 4 Pregnancy Tips with you!

  • Read, read, read – be informed, as ‘they’ say knowledge is power. So read all the books you can get your hands on, find out all you need to know to make the correct pregnancy and birth choices, for you. {You can have an information overload at times and it may scare you initially but it is worth it in the long run, to know what to expect!}

  • Ask questions, especially of moms that have been through it all already, most will be more than happy to share their experiences; you may just need to sift through some drama to get to the reality sometimes! Join an antenatal class, it’s a great place to meet other parents and discuss any of your fears or concerns.
  • Look after yourself – you are as important as your baby! Take time out for yourself, take your prenatal vitamins, rest, try to eat a healthy well-balanced diet {although sometimes the cravings will get the better of you!}, listen to your doctor he{or she} is usually right!

  • Remember to enjoy every minute of your experience as a mom-to-be, talk to your unborn baby, play music for him/her, take time out to plan the nursery, enjoy shopping for those first precious little outfits – in other words remember to have some fun!

Top 5 New Baby Essentials

Having a baby is a truly life-changing experience. It’s a brilliant time, full of expectancy and excitement. But it can also be a time of nerves and anxiety. Luckily, there are plenty of places you can go to get advice. Ask your family, your doctor or a health visitor, and speak to other mums – you’ll soon realise that everything is going to be fine.

Before the baby arrives, it’s a good idea to make sure that everything is in order and that you have everything you need. You’re not going to have much free time once your baby is born, so get prepared now. There are five essential items that every baby will need to thrive in the first few important months of life.

Top 5 New Baby Essentials:

1. Car seat
There’s no avoiding it – if you’ve got a car, you need a seat to keep your precious baby safe. They’re readily available, but always buy new. It’s just safer that way.

2. Baby bottles
Even if you’re going to breastfeed, you still need bottles to deliver expressed milk. You’re going to need a range of sizes because before long, your little one will be drinking more than a small bottle can hold. As well as bottles, you’re also going to need baby grows and plenty of nappies. These are the main necessities for any new-born baby, so think about stocking up now.

3. Stroller
After a few months your baby is going to start to want to move and explore. A stroller is basically a mobile support frame that allows your baby to get around before they can do so completely unsupported. You can pick up strollers – also known as baby walkers – without spending a fortune.

4. Baby bouncer
Before they get mobile, you’re going to need somewhere stimulating to put the baby when you aren’t holding him or her. Baby bouncers are safe and fun ways for babies to take in their environment, while allowing you to get on with the many things you need to be doing. You’re going to be busy, so this is a valuable item to have.

5. Crib/cot
Although it might not seem like your baby is ever going to sleep, you need a comfortable and warm cot for them to rest in. This is a really important place for a baby, and if it’s somewhere that they feel comfortable, you may even be able to get a couple of hours sleep yourself! Always buy a respectable brand name.
