In this digital world we live in, people are asking the question – is the power of the printed word becoming a forgotten entity. I definitely do not want my children, to miss out on the power of reading books, first hand – this is not an easy feet with “I pads” and “Kindle’s” taking the world by storm. So in our quest to keep the printed word alive, my girls have compiled a few ideas of age appropriate, recommended reading. I am hoping that this can become a regular segment in my blog.

So if you have children or are looking for gifts here are a few ideas – “real books” read by “real girls” (boys are also most welcome to send in their contributions):

I recommend this book for a ten year old or older it is called “Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself” written by Judy Blume.

I really enjoyed reading this book, it was almost like it was about me and I was one of the characters in the book. It was very interesting and full of amazing adventures that Sally makes up in her head – which I love doing too. So if you like fun and adventure you must read it.

I recommend this book mainly for anyone my age, 7 years or older it is called “Diary of a Wimpy Kid –THE UGLY TRUTH” written by Jeff Kinney.

I have two of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books but I liked this one the best of all. It’s all about boy called Greg and what happens to him. I loved that it is all funny, gross and weird and so many silly things happen to Greg but I still enjoyed it. It was very funny and I loved reading it – I hope you enjoy it!

I recommend this book mainly for girls who are ten years old or older it is called “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” written by Judy Blume.

This book is great; it is about girls that start a secret club, they talk about growing up and all the stuff that you go through and about boys. It also shows you that girls from different “worlds” can be friends. It was lots of fun to read – I hope you enjoy it.

4 Things..., Lifestyle

4 Things You Will Not Be Able to Live Without

Ok – so this was quite hard for me, picking just 4 things – tricky one! This does not include things like God and my family because that is a given!

  • My first item that I could not live without is my hairdryer – “OMW” scary stuff , you have to see the “before” and then the “after” to truly understand why, I am not into the whole “shaggy do” look – unfortunately no photo’s!

  • My morning coffee – well to put it simply you do not want to be around me before I have my coffee, I am so not a morning person! ( I have been known to take my ‘Lavazza’ machine on holiday with me – yes it is that bad)
  • My camera is next on the list – I am slightly obsessed with “capturing the moment”, I married a man who hates photos, well “hated” them-he is now a convert!

  • My last item would have to be “spell check” or my dictionary and thesaurus – yes I am notoriously bad at spelling, my secret is out – thank goodness for a husband who is a language boffin! My editor extraordinaire.
What are the 4Things you could not live without? I would love to hear from you – it could be fun to compare notes!

What is your favourite room in your home?

Kitchen Inspiration

My favourite place in my home is definitely the kitchen – “the heart of the Home”. As a family, we all love cooking, and my girls often help out in the kitchen, unless they have too much homework to do, that is. We try and eat together most nights, which is a great way to spend quality family time together. What is your favourite room in your home?

Food Tips & Stress Less

Food Tips

One of my all-time favourite magazines to buy is Woman’s Health; I read it cover to cover and find it an essential part of my health and fitness regime. I loved the food tips from the most recent issue, August 2011, on reducing the stress surrounding meal prep and planning; “10 Foods and 40 Recipes”. They also have a great website, so click on the link above a take a look.

Food Tips

Food Tips

As we all know, having a healthy diet is so important, especially when you have a family to take care of. Teaching our children good food habits from an early age is vital. Both of our girls love food and that includes the preparation and cooking thereof. Their tastes are quite different but we seem to find some middle ground; although my youngest would eat sushi 24/7 if she could and the eldest will not touch the stuff.

For me the emphasis needs to be on healthy balanced meals but speedy preparation, easy execution but not forgetting taste. As a family we very rarely eat take away food or pre-prepared meals, which often means more effort and time spent on the preparation. So how do you go about taking the stress out of this part of domestic life? The answer is simple; you need to plan your meals in advance. This is easier said than done, knowing how hectic life can be but I have proven to myself that it does work.

I have never been someone to follow recipes but I find inspiration from them – I use them as a guide rather than a bible. I know cooking does not come naturally to some people, so recipes are a great resource but whatever your approach, planning can simplify your life.

If you are in need of some inspiration or direction you can have a look at ‘Woman’s Health Mealfinder‘. I have also found these cookbooks useful: ‘Jamie Oliver’s 30-Minute- Meals’ and Nigella Lawson’s – ‘Kitchen’, for recipes and ideas.

So make the process fun and involve the family, get everyone to pick a meal for a certain night of the week and create a menu. This will help with planning as well; it also encourages children to try new foods and it teaches them good domestic skills.   We usually aim for a menu running from Monday to Thursday, leaving the weekend for a bit of spontaneity.  We also make our own pizzas and burgers which the girls love getting involved in.

Once you have a game plan and your list of ingredients, you can hit the shops and get cooking. I have included the link to the  recipe for my tasty chicken dish, “Fee’s Chicken and Leek Casserole”, which my family love; for you to try.

Hope this is helpful and I would love to hear any cooking tips you have to share.

4 Things You May Not Know About Motherhood

4 Things you may not know about motherhood:

  • You never stop worrying about your children – NEVER, its cradle to grave stuff (yours that is!)
  • Your feet may actually grow a size or two after pregnancy – So do not buy those “Jimmy Choo’s” before you have a baby!

  • Your “stuff” is no longer “your stuff” – That includes your body and if you have girls, your wardrobe is definitely under threat!
  • You are never just “a Mother” – You are a chef, full time nurse, counsellor, teacher and not to forget taxi driver!
