A few weeks back I asked readers, via Facebook and Twitter, which room in their home they would like to renovate first. The general consensus was that the first room to receive a little makeover magic would be their kitchens! I agree 100 percent, for me the kitchen is the centre of the home – essentially “the heart of the home” and a place, where you will spend a great deal of your time, especially as a mom! A kitchen needs to be both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

My kitchen is like my “art studio”, it is where I create my master pieces!
It must be a space that it pleasing to my soul because lets face it sometimes even I, do not feel all that inspired to “paint”.
We recently had the opportunity to do a mini makeover on half of our kitchen. It sounds strange to only do half but I have had my eye on a gorgeous Smeg gas/electric range, which I was treated to as an early Christmas pressie! A new stove or cooker is definitely at the top of my list of priorities when comes to renovating my kitchen. Our original oven was much smaller and in order to fit the new one in we had to create more space, which required having to move kitchen cabinets. Instead of refurbing the original cabinets we had, we decided to have new free-standing units made.
I decided to use this makeover opportunity to inject a bit of colour into my kitchen, which had an otherwise neutral colour scheme. Colour is very important to me in interior decorating but I am quite conservative in the base colour that goes into a room. I do however like to be bold with my colour choice of accessories and soft furnishings and introduce colour into a room in that way.

It is important to gather inspiration before you begin any renovation project, draw up a mood board and have a fairly clear idea of what you would like the space to look like. I used Pinterest, a virtual pinboard to gather images, which you can see above, to find colour schemes I liked and inspire my creative process. You can also use everyday items such as pots, coffee cups even tea towels, such as the these items below from my own kitchen, to help you formulate design ideas.
It is impossible to be 100% certain of the outcome and you will probably change your mind on certain things along the way but you at least need a starting point.

We decided to not only include colour in our kitchen accessories and appliances but also in the cabinetry. A brave decision but I love it! The only problem now is that the renovation bug has bitten – what will be next I wonder?

Our kitchen is the heart of our home and one of my favourite places to be. As I have said before design and layout are important but the culinary gadgets you collect over time are equally important. These are the 4 things that complete my kitchen:

- A bright red “Kitchen Aid” Artisan mixer – well mine is red, but any colour will do, as long as it’s a “Kitchen Aid”. As well as being a practical asset, it is also a work of art – so even if you never use it, it looks good!
- A bright red “Le Creuset” pot – yes you are seeing a trend, I do like red, almost as much as I like pink. This is an absolute must, if you do not already have one – they are quite pricey but worth every cent!

- A good set of knives is vital, start small and build on your collection – any chef will tell you this is an absolute must, you cannot under estimate the importance of good quality – sharp knives, just watch those fingers!
- A “Jamie Oliver” cookbook or two – yes I am a big fan, his cookbooks are great and his recipes actually work. Again if you never use them, they look great on the shelf!

Happy Cooking!

What is your favourite room in your home? My favourite room in my home is definitely the kitchen – “the heart of the Home”. As a family we all love cooking and my girls often help out in the kitchen, unless they have too much home work to do,that is. We try and eat together most nights, which is a great way to spend quality family time together.
To me, the perfect kitchen must be both functional and pretty; it is always top of the list when considering renovations, of our home. As you can see from these pictures, which make up my kitchen wish list, I love white. It must be the purist in me because it is also my favourite colour to wear.

I also love the warmth that wood can bring to a kitchen and I love using natural materials where possible and if it is cost effective. My dream kitchen would be a mix of white and wood, with a bit of stone for some added texture. A monochromatic colour scheme can also be visually appealing. Style wise I prefer a mix of classic and country style, as opposed to very modern design.

The most important appliance in my kitchen is definitely the range, or cooker, which at present is in need of an upgrade. The combination of gas and electric works best for me. Following which the importance of worktop/counter space can never be underestimated, especially if you are messy cook – not that I am! Storage space is next on the list and you need to make sure your storage is functional. Although open shelves look good, they are not always the best solution, I think things get too dusty out in the open. Perhaps just having a few open shelves to display one or two of your favourite items on or a few beautiful cook books, is the happy medium.

The final item on my kitchen wish list is a dining table in the kitchen, preferably wood – yes I “love” wood. We might have to move house, to have enough room for all my requirements!

So watch this space – hopefully my wishes will come true!
