Key Style Trends – The Trench Coat

Trench-Coat-Header

One of my favourite purchases for the season has to be my Trench Coat! One of the Key Style Trends – The Trench Coat has been big this season, you will find them in a variety of colours, styles and fabrics. It is one of those classic pieces that will not easily go out of fashion.

The important thing to remember when buying a Trench Coat, especially if you would like it to be a wardrobe staple, is to not to buy trendy colours, which may very well not be “in” next winter.

I have not had much success in the past when it comes to buying a Trench Coat but it seems as if the fashion gods showed me some favour this season. The main thing I battle with is the length of the coat, as I am a bit on the short side but I managed to snap up the perfect one, at the beginning of winter!

The big plus is that this Trench Coat is that it is the perfect length for me and it is not too heavy, the fabric is light-weight, which is perfect for layering. An added bonus is the animal print lining – every gal needs a bit of animal in her wardrobe!

You may remember my fashion consult with the amazing Dominique Luck, in June this year, well the Trench Coat was one of our focus pieces, when putting outfits together. The Trench Coat is something that can be great for an everyday smart casual look and it works equally well, in the evening, with a smarter more sophisticated outfit.

I thought I would share a few of the combo’s with you. We mixed and matched my Trench Coat, with items I already have in my wardrobe, to diversify the overall look.

Do you own a Trench Coat or do you prefer another style of coat for winter? Which is your favourite Trench Coat look?

Winter Wardrobe Consult with Dominique Luck

Winter-Wardrobe-Consult Header

As many of you may have realised I am a bit of a shopaholic! Where other women may comfort eat, I comfort shop! This really is not a good trait to have, mainly because you end up with items in your wardrobe that serve no purpose at all and have simply been bought on a whim. This type of shopping can result in having a wardrobe crammed with clothing yet having absolutely “nothing to wear”!

dominique

Much to my good fortune I was invited to attend a Winter Wardrobe Chat, hosted by the lovely Dominique Luck. Dominique is a Fashion Designer by profession, who after having two boys, decided to make it her mission to help women realise their full “style” potential.

I was blown away by how easy Dominique made it look to coordinate your wardrobe! I simply new that this was not a per chance meeting but one that was destined to be 🙂

When I told some of my friends that I was going to consult a stylist, their reaction was one of surprise, because in their own words “you have good personal style”, which I would generally agree with. Truth be told, I may get it right some of the time but when you are only wearing twenty percent of your wardrobe there is definitely a problem.

I know that some people feel that a stylist or wardrobe consultant is only for the rich and famous but let me dispel any myths you may have – this is definitely not the case. If you, like me, have so much in your wardrobe but still have an issue putting an outfit together, then this is definitely something you need to do.

What exactly does a wardrobe consult involve? It is not as frightening as it sounds – “baring your inner-most self to someone you hardly know”. In actual fact it was lots of fun and I learnt so much, both about myself and about style do’s and don’ts. All you need are a few hours and your perception of fashion and shopping will never be the same again!

Dominique provides a few different services but you need to begin at the beginning. You need to start by sorting through what you already have, to establish an action plan going forward.

Winter-Wardrobe-Consult Hangers

First off you need to get in touch with your existing wardrobe:

* Outline your lifestyle and identify key functions of your wardrobe – everyday wear, active wear, occasion wear.

* Get rid of everything that makes you feel frumpy, tired, boring or just plain scary.

* Identify missing link pieces, to build outfits that work for you instead of against you.

* Learn how to dress to express yourself, within your budget.

As a mom of two, my general style is fairly casual and my everyday winter wardrobe usually consists of jeans, a long-sleeved T, jumper and a jacket or puffer. This type of style is great for general day to day wear but often I need to attend events and this is where I have found gaps in my wardrobe.

We began the consult by sorting through all the winter items which I love and combining them with other items to create different outfits.

As I mentioned earlier I have a slight shopping “habit” and find it difficult to stop myself buying an item if I like it, but the words of advice from Dominique, much to my hubbies delight, were “STOP SHOPPING!”

So although I have an extensive wardrobe I still struggle to combine items into a cohesive outfit, which I feel confident wearing! This is where Dominique’s expertise and style knowledge comes to the fore.

After the wardrobe sort Dominique sent me a report back outlining the issues with my existing winter wardrobe and any gaps I may have or items I need to include going forward.

Winter-Wardrobe-Consult-hanging

Dominique’s advice was to separate my winter and summer wardrobe, including shoes. I originally had all my hanging items in one wardrobe, which makes finding items quite difficult. She also adivised narrowing down my accessories and scarves, into what I am actually wearing for the season and pack away the rest. The great thing about doing this, is the items I am not wearing during winter will not clutter my wardrobe and it will be fun going through them again, for the next season.

Winter-Wardrobe-Consult Boots

I found this entire experience to be so worthwhile! Not only am I wearing items that have been gathering dust for so long but after separating my summer and winter wardrobe, I am not constantly struggling to know what to wear! Getting ready to go out takes a fraction of the time and I have so much more confidence putting outfits together.

Dominique has also identified certain gaps in my winter wardrobe and I now have a wishlist, which will make shopping more effective, as I know which items I need. This will allow me to be more selective when I shop and purchase items which will coordinate well with my existing wardrobe.

I highly recommend trying out Dominique’s wardrobe services, as it will change your perspective on shopping and help you be more confident in your personal styling!

If you would like to contact Dominique you can call her on Tel: 0798 999 889 or Email: [email protected]

Thanks Dominique for an invaluable experience! I look forward to coordinating my summer wardrobe next season!

Fashion and Colour Trends for Autumn Winter 2013

Colour trends autumn winter 2013

This weeks style post is all about which colours are trending for autumn and winter fashions this year! I get super excited about seeing what is new in the stores and on-line on fashion websites! Yes I am slightly obsessed! As I have mentioned I am certainly not a slave to fashion but I am definitely fashion conscious. I feel that I have my own sense of style but I love to have fun and incorporate fashion trends  into my existing wardrobe. There are so many ways to do this from actual clothing items to accessories and even makeup or nail polish colours.

I think it is vital that even if you shop the fashion trends, that you remember to dress your body shape and not wear things that do not flatter your figure, all in the name of fashion! A program I am loving at the moment, mostly when my hubby is not around ;), is Gok Wan’s Style Secrets. My hubby may not be a fan but I think Gok imparts valid and essential fashion advice. The show is aimed at singles but his message applies to all woman who want to embrace their sensuality and dress their individual body shape and most importantly have the confidence to do it with style!

One of my favourites trend colours for this season is deep purple! Above you can see the Pantone Fashion Report for Fall 2013, which includes wonderfully rich colours, perfect for the colder months ahead. I love most of these colours and have already started scouting the fashion stores to find the ones that I do not have in my wardrobe.

Style by Super Mom Seeing Red

Seeing-Red 16

I know the weather today is a bit chilly for this outfit but it was a post that was meant to be published last week but alas did not happen! Well if nothing else here is something to brighten a rather grey day in Cape Town!

These red skinny jeans from Woolworths are my new favourite item of clothing! Well you know by now I love red and lucky for me it is super popular this season. The floral T is also from Woolworths and the jacket you must know by now is from Mr Price and was featured here and here.

Seeing-Red16

The skinny jeans are a great fit, very flattering(so the hubby tells me) and I have taken to rolling the hem of my jeans up, for a preppy-look, which according to Lucy da Costa from Style Society SA is bang on trend! I am loving this floral T which also has the high-low hem I have blogged about before.

Seeing-Red14

These gorgeous pumps, from Luli Pulani, are one of my favourite pairs! Not only do they look good but yes they are red and super comfy too!

Style by Super Mom – Denim and Gold Part II

Denim-&-Gold-part-II-4

Denim-&-Gold-part-II3

The studded denim jacket above from Mr Price, is one of my favourite finds for Autumn/Winter this year. I think it is the vivid Indigo colour that I love so much. It looks great with your basic colours like black, white and grey but it really pops when you pair it with red. That of course is material for another post entirely!

The other thing I love about the jacket are the gold studs, I have been dying to own something with studs and I thought this was the perfect place to start!  I am wearing the Mr Price jacket over my leggings and long T from the EarthAddict Classic range.

Denim-&-Gold-part-II-5

Gold is definitely one of my most popular accessory choices for the season. It compliments black beautifully but works equally well with brights such as red and orange, which are also trending this season.

The ring above is my latest purchase from Accessorize, I have the same style ring in grey and white and I have had so much wear out of them this summer. I love chunky jewellery and I have gotten so many compliments wearing these rings that I simply could not resist the gold one! The gold bracelet it also from Accessorize.

Denim-&-Gold-part-II-8

The nail colour I chose for this outfit is Carry On by Essie, it is one of my favourite winter shades. It is so dark and sultry, without being too goth-like! I love it!

Items: Studded Denim Jacket R179 Mr Price, Raven Classic Long-sleeved T R299 Earthaddict, Raven Classic Leggings R349 Earthaddict, Gold Facet Ring R199 Accessorize , Gold Bobble Stretch Bracelet R119 Accessorize, Essie Nail Polish R99.
