Family

Who comes first?

The most difficult challenge that faces us as moms is to retain some of who you are. It is a fact that our children shape and mould us as people, as we do them. I do however think it is important to not forget who you are and look after your own physical and emotional needs.

Something that has always been important to me is my relationship with my husband, which a lot of people neglect in the attempt to be the perfect mother. In my mind I am a wife first then a mother. Which is not because I do not love my girls as much but about the message I want to send them. I feel that if they see us in a happy healthy relationship they will want this for themselves. I am definitely not saying we are perfect but we are honest and open in our relationship which they hopefully see.

So the goals I am setting myself for this week are, to do something only for me and secondly do something to enrich the important relationships in my life.

Parenthood

In current times we find ourselves continually searching for validation in all we do and parenting is no exception. I remember reading an article just after our first daughter was born which stated that ‘good enough parenting’ was what we should aim for. The perfectionist in me was horrified at the thought of not being the perfect mom and there began my journey striving for parental perfection.

The big question after marriage is when to start a family and I guess if we knew the potential heart ache that lay ahead we would never start. There is however no right time and you can never be prepared for what lies ahead. The joy of holding your new baby is something that is beyond words; you are both in awe of the miracle and at the same time terrified of the responsibility that comes with it!

I remember someone saying that it is amazing that something so small can change your life forever and no matter how you deny that it will change, it is inevitable. So here we find ourselves on a wonderful journey called parenthood.
