Gourmet Boerie

Last week we attended the official launch of Gourmet Boerie, which I blogged about over here last month. With Mr en-tow we ventured out to the centre of town last Saturday evening, to check-out the newly opened restaurant. Gourmet Boerie is situated on the corner of Kloof Street in Cape Town, a wonderful vibey part of the Mother City. The vibe at the launch on Saturday evening was indeed tangible!

We were greated at the door with a drink of our choice – you guessed it, bubbles for me, who would ever refuse awesome Cape Bubbly! There were also craft beers on tap, a selection of wines, coolers and soft drinks so everyone was well catered for.

I really love the décor of the restaurant and much to our surprise, we found out that one of our neighbours was instrumental in the development of the space! The décor is modern with wonderful exposed brick work, clean lines, vibrant colours and a stunning bar area, perfect for stopping in for a beer and boerie on your way home in the evening.

The main dining space is casual with long tables and benches; there is an additional seating area outside with large folding doors to allow the restaurant to flow naturally to the outside area, which is great for alfresco summer dining.

I was not entirely to sure what to expect when sampling the “boerie rolls” but I must admit I was very pleasantly surprised. The bread rolls where light and airy and the boerie was perfectly cooked, with that “perfect bite” and certainly not tough or full of gristle. The flavour combinations where heavenly! My favourite was the “The Hangover”, topped with bacon, caramelised pineapple and avocado with cheese sauce followed closely by the “Shroom Sauce”,  topped with a creamy mushroom sauce with fresh herbs and cos lettuce – seriously yummy!

Skinny laMinx by Heather Moore

I am always inspired by the creativity that surrounds us in South Africa, amazing local design talent that is right here on our doorstep! One such very talented lady is Heather Moore. Heather is a self-taught illustrator and designer from Cape Town, with a design label called Skinny laMinx.

I like to cut designs from paper & produce screen-printed textiles, and really, I just like to make things. I have a lovely husband, two angelic kitties & quite a few bicycles. ~ Heather Moore

Skinny laMinx products are fun and quirky with a definite South African flavour. Skinny laMinx products are 100% South African, with design inspiration lifted from nature and everyday objects. You will find gorgeous Wild Flowers, Pincushions, Duikers and Flower Feilds in shades of Framboos, Blueberry, Cocoa to name but a few. Truly unique and exceptional designs at very affordable prices.

I thought I would share a few of Heather’s inspired designs with you, especially seen as Christmas is just around the corner and you may be needing some gift inspiration!

Cotton On Super Store Canal Walk

Last week I was invited to attend the opening of Cotton On, Super Store, in canal Walk, Cape Town. As you could probably guess I would never turn down an opportunity to shop and I was rather curious as to what this new store has to offer the Capetonian consumer!

The Australian brand is well-known for effortless style at affordable prices. I must confess I did find the prices quite reasonable, I would have to say probably less than half what you would pay for a similar item at the likes of high-street store like Zara. The store is huge and the staff were helpful and friendly.

The Cotton On Super Store is the second of its kind in SA and it houses all their popular brands: Mens, Ladies, Cotton On Body and Cotton On Kids. Plus a small section of Typo goodies. The opening of the Super Store is perfectly timed, with Christmas on our door step and summer officially here!

Their ladies wear ranges from casual everyday T-shirts, shorts and dresses to something a bit smarter for work or an evening out. I definitely prefer their more casual range, I loved their summery boob-tube dresses and their casual jackets. I really liked the prints on their T’s but I found the fit really odd – a bit too big across the chest area!

Their mens T-shirts are great and really reasonably priced. They are made from beautifully soft cotton, with trendy prints and awesome colours for summer. I bought MR two and he absolutely loves them 🙂

The swim wear range was rather popular with all the shoppers there, I must admit I am not ready to start the swim wear search but when I am I will definitely head back to Cotton On to have a look. I also loved their Body range, which features really pretty underwear and gorgeous sleep wear.

Cotton On Kids is very cute and they have super trendy goodies for the little-ones, the only negative is that the kids range only caters up to the age of 7 so if you have older sprouts you are out of luck!

I would definitely recommend a visit to the Cotton On Super Store but I would advise you make it soon before the seasons mayhem really starts. Thanks to Cotton On for the preview and our goodie bag 🙂

PS. I will share my purchase from Cotton On in a separate post!

Cotton On Super Store Canal Walk is located on the Lower Level Shop 85LL, Contact Tel:(021) 552 0726, Opening Times are 9am to 9pm.

My First Big Walk

Yesterday 31 000 Capetonians took to the streets for the 2012 Discovery Cape Times Big Walk. The weather was perfect for a brisk walk along one of the 10 routes on offer on the day.

Participants could choose a walk that suited their fitness levels from 5km, 10km, 11km, 12km and 13km walks, to the longer and more gruelling 20km, 25km, 30km, 50km and 80km events.  While most walks commenced between 07:00 and 10:00 at various locations around Cape Town, the 80km and 50km events commenced at 03:45 and 06:15 respectively.

In a moment of sheer madness, I opted to do the 30km walk, which started in Simon’s Town at 09:00. The weather for the first half of the walk was cool and pleasant but it certainly heated up as the day progressed! There were plenty of refreshment stations and first aid stops along the way. I did make use of both of these to keep my fluids up and to nurse a few blistered toes! I must admit there were times when I felt like stopping and giving up but I just kept pushing myself and kept in mind the very worthy cause I was supporting.

The funds raised at the Big Walk go to CANSA, The Steenberg Foundation, Nazareth House, The Rotary Club of Claremont and Spartan Harriers to support the initiatives of these organisations.

Head of Sponsorships at Discovery, Jody Foster, says Discovery was delighted by the turnout for the Cape Town event.

“I am heartened by the enthusiasm and goodwill that was evident throughout the day. This type of initiative is firmly in line with Discovery’s vision of a more active and healthier South Africa with the population benefitting from fewer health risks and an improved quality of life.” ~ Jody Foster

Event Director, Tanya Carolus says that organising the 2012 Discovery Cape Times Big Walk required a significant amount of logistical planning and implementation, from determining the routes and planning medical points and refreshments stations to getting partners on board to help facilitate the event.

“Seeing how many people turned up in their walking shoes to enjoy the event makes it all worthwhile.” ~ Tanya Carolus

Discovery thanks all participants who took part in the event, as well as its partners, and the Cape Times for ensuring the day was such a great success.

I am certainly proud to have taken part in this event and would encourage anyone who has not yet done a Big Walk to get involved in 2013! I will be doing it next year along with my family but I may opt for a slightly shorter route!
