Muizenberg Revisited

Muizenberg is a seaside suburb in Cape Town, South Africa, situated on the Cape Peninsula, on the east side of the False Bay coast. It is home to many examples of grand Victorian architecture, dating back to a time when the area was an exclusive seaside resort for the rich and famous. Muizenberg beach is one of the more popular swimming beaches in Cape Town and is considered to be the birthplace of surfing in South Africa.

This area comes alive during the summer season, with holiday-makers and novice surfers enjoying the calm, warmer water, which makes this stretch of coastline so popular.

There are a variety of surf shops, surf schools, restaurants, coffee shops and apartments located along the main beach pavilion – “Surfers Corner”. You have to visit  Knead Bakery, when you are in Muizenberg and sample their scrumptious pastries, washed down with a glorious cappuccino!

As a teenager, my friends and I frequented Muizenberg Beach, catching a train from the Southern Suburbs along the coast. We spent many a day lazing in the sun, watching our friends surf and swimming in the sea. Visiting the area recently brought back many happy childhood memories! My eldest daughter is a keen boogie-boarder, so I can see “surf school” in her future!

Celebrating Christmas in South Africa

Celebrating Christmas in South Africa

In South Africa we celebrate Christmas in a rather traditional manner, similar to the United Kingdom or Europe – the major difference being the weather!

Celebrating Christmas in South Africa

I love all aspects of Christmas including tree decorating, shopping, wrapping of gifts and the scrumptious meals; it all forms an important part of this rather special time of year!

Festivities become apparent from the end of November as many companies begin to wind down and schools close for the summer holidays. Shop windows are adorned with Christmas décor, Christmas carols are played in-store and the Christmas gifting displays begin to make their appearance. Christmas displays seem to appear in stores earlier and earlier every year!

In our home the festive season is officially on its way when we put our Christmas tree up, which happen fairly early this year, in early December. My girls had the job of adorning it with all the beautiful Christmas decorations, which we have collected over the past 15 years – since we got married! Our family tradition is to buy each of our girls a new decoration each year to build on our collection.

Another big festive tradition in Cape Town is the switching on of the Christmas lights in Adderly street, which is in the centre of town.  This is South Africa’s biggest free open-air event, the City of Cape Town’s annual switching on of the festive lights, which this year was held on Sunday, 4 December. The City’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Patricia de Lille, kicks off the summer Festive Season with the official switch on; this event usually draws a crowd of over 80 000 people.  A range of entertainment is available, including a carnival parade with floats, live performances and appearances by some of the leading television and radio personalities from Cape Town and South Africa.

Our main Christmas celebration takes place on Christmas Eve when our extended family gathers to enjoy a special dinner together. We begin the evening by snacking on canapés and toasting with champagne – followed by the exchange of gifts.  Although the weather in South Africa is hot at this time of the year we still enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner, with roast turkey and gammon with all the trimmings, followed by a Christmas pudding (reminiscent of the British colonial tradition). To make things even more festive we usually insist on all members of the family donning a colourful paper hat that is usually found in the Christmas crackers, which are pulled before dinner.

On Christmas day many people head off to church in the morning to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of Christ, and sing carols. Our immediate family exchange gifts early morning; the girls are usually so excited and get us out of bed super early!

We usually enjoy a family Christmas Day lunch, which may involve a cold version of dinner, with gammon, turkey and vegetables or salad. Many families however prefer to have a braai (South African word for barbeque) and celebrate in a less traditional manner.

All in all Christmas is a rather significant occasion in South Africa, eagerly anticipated by many and which is celebrated by a large part of the greater community throughout the country. It is a time of the year that people put aside their differences and come together to celebrate this special event. I hope you have enjoyed my feature on Christmas in South Africa!

Wishing all a very Merry Christmas and a festive New Years!

My Favourite Festive Tipple

Festive Tipple - Champagne

I love pink bubbly and during the festive season my favourite festive tipple makes its appearance with regular frequency! You certainly will not hear me complaining about a glass of ice cold bubbly served with a delicious meal or just sipped while enjoying good company – who needs an excuse!

Festive Tipple - Champagne

My Favourite Festive Tipple

I thought I would share my four favourite, South African, “pink” sparkling wines with you.

Methode Cap Classique denotes a South African sparkling wine made by the traditional Champagne method.

Graham Beck Brut Rose

My all-time favourite is Graham Beck Brut Rose, which we always buy when visiting the Graham Beck Estate in Franschhoek. This fine silver pink blush is expertly crafted in the traditional Methode Cap Classique, combining Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, to create a bubbly that bursts with flavour on your tongue.

Second on my list is Villiera Tradition Brut Rose. Whilst being exceptionally easy drinking it combines the full flavour of Pinot Noir, with the elegance of Chardonnay and the uniqueness of Pinotage, which provides the colour.

This is closely followed by Le Grande Pavillon Brut Rosé. A variety of red cultivars and a small amount of Chardonnay grape are selected from Boschendal’s finest vineyards and combined in classical Methode Cap Classique, to create a wine with a pronounced fruit structure complemented by a seductive sparkle.

Last but certainly not least is the Simonsig Pinot Noir Brut Rosé Vintage. The iconic, Kaapse Vonkel, which turns 40 this year, has released the second vintage of the popular no-added-sulphur Limited Release Pinot Noir Brut Rosé 2010 – made exclusively for Woolworths. It is made with 100% Pinot Noir grape, and has the palest salmon tinge with an enticingly fruity nose. In my personal opinion it also has a faint flavour of whiskey on the palate – leading to a crisp, dry finish.

To quote a rather famous lady on the occasion of drinking champagne…

I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it—unless I’m thirsty. – Lilly Bollinger
