V&A Waterfront Kids Holiday Program

The midyear holidays will soon be upon us and if you are not jetting off to some faraway destination you will most definitely be interested the fantastic indoor children’s programme that the V & A Waterfront is offering.

From June 24 until July 15, a combination of free and affordable activities will be on the go daily from 10am until 5pm, for children aged four to nine years.

Barrow Court, in the heart of the Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre and adjacent to children’s retailers, is where pint-sized food lovers and blossoming eco artists should go to have a blast starting from July 3. The Waterfront’s Kids Ahoy play zone is offering one hour workshops, at R50 per child, where your littlies will be introduced to the fun side of food, arts and crafts.

Activities such as pancake decorating, craft making and even Mini Master Chef challenges, where children will learn how to make their own mystery main meal with pre-cooked ingredients or decorate desserts with filling, icing and fresh fruit, will entertain and delight while giving mom and dad an hour of their own time,” said Chantelle Cole, V&A Waterfront Executive Manager of Strategic Marketing. “At 4pm each day, there will be free puppet shows and an opportunity to meet Sam the Two Ocean Aquarium’s penguin mascot”.

From July 3 in the Red Shed, alongside the Cape Town Fish Market and Ster-Kinekor, kids will be entertained by qualified child minders with age appropriate toys and games for R30 an hour for up to two hours, freeing up parents to do their shopping or have a relaxed meal.

In the Craft Market, adjacent to the Two Oceans Aquarium, a one hour craft market, at R50 per child, will be hosted twice daily; parents are welcome to join in the fun. Plant Craft Mania at 1pm, will see children potting, planting, painting, platting, pressing, decorating and doing creative recycling, while animal craft creations at 3pm will spoil pets back at home with specially decorated drinking bowls and homemade bird feeders.

Children can make friends with ducklings, piglets, chickens, guinea pigs and rabbits at the Craft Market’s Petting Farm from 10.30am until 4.30pm daily. Entrance is R20 for all ages.

Children can also enter our ‘Mouse Explores the Waterfront’ colouring-in competition by collecting a sheet from Barrow Court, and completing it either at home or while at the V&A Waterfront and enter before July 22 to win great prizes such as a birthday party at the Two Oceans Aquarium valued at R 1 650, Happy Hopper Memberships or a Mini Master Chef DIY Cooking Hamper valued at R 500”, said Cole.

Space for all activities is limited and bookings can be made at the Waterfront Information Kiosk from June 23.

Other family friendly activities include favourites such as the Wheel of Excellence, the Jolly Roger pirate boat, Scratch Patch and cave golf.

Earth Fair Market Comes to Noordhoek

Earthfair Market

Noordhoek and the South Peninsula now has its very own fresh food market! The Earth Fair Market is fairly new evening market at Noordhoek Farm Village. How exciting, this is great opportunity for locals to enjoy shopping for great local produce and a chance to enjoy a selection of craft beers and organic wine once the shopping is done!

Earth Fair Market Noordhoek

Earth Fair Market

You will be probably be familiar with Earth Fair Food Market in Tokai or St Georges Mall – they have gained an excellent reputation and host top quality traders selling a range of locally produced and artisan food products. We are talking about real smoked fish, butchers selling free range meat, organic fruit and veggies as well as bakers, dairy producers and other quality products.

Earth Fair Market has established itself over the last 3 years in Tokai and its open air St Georges Market has rapidly become one of the top markets in Cape Town.

Earth Fair Market

Earth Fair at Noordhoek Farm Village will be held under a Bedouin tent in front of the Foodbarn and will host 20-25 of the top traders and artisans in Cape Town. Market goers can stock up on top quality fresh produce, farm cheeses and artisan breads. Once all the shopping is done, shoppers can grab a seat at the communal tables and enjoy a variety of craft beers, organic wines, stoneground flour crepes, tasty treats from the FoodBarn and sushi from De Noordhoek Hotel.  Stokkiesdraai will be there with their famous biltong, there will be freshly made Crepes by Lemon Moon, Bratwursts by Top Nosh etc.

Earth Fair Market is all about supporting small, local producers and providing ethically farmed and produced food.  They will be bringing their bustling, high quality market to the Village every Thursday for a late afternoon/evening market.  Scheduled to open on the 21st June at Noordhoek Farm Village. The market will be held from 4pm- 8.30/9pm every Thursday evening.

We are really looking forward to Earth Fair being a part of the Noordhoek Farm Village, a first of its kind in the Beautiful South. The aim of the market is to supply locals with good quality fresh produce and speciality goods and to provide a family orientated community meeting point.

The success of the Earth Fair Food Market in Tokai and St George’s Mall has been a combination of its’ consistency and accessibility to everyday shoppers as well as the quality of the artisans trading at the market.

Foodies will be delighted to welcome this addition to the Food Scene at Noordhoek Farm Village – already well-known for its’ quality restaurants The Foodbarn, Cafe Roux and The Toad in the Village. As well as the Foodbarn Deli (which will stock some of the artisan’s produce on their shelves) and their evening Tapas offering and of course the restaurant at De Noordhoek ensuring that Noordhoek Farm Village is THE Foodie Centre of the South Peninsula!

Hope to see you there!

Top Ice Cream Spots in Cape Town

I know its Winter in Cape Town but that does not mean so say that ice cream is not still a firm favourite, especially in our household! It is one of those things that you can enjoy come rain or shine! After all we all need a bit of indulgence in our lives! So I thought I would share my Top Ice Cream Spots in Cape Town, including a few recommendations from my readers.

  • The Creamery

I recently had the pleasure of sampling their delicious ice cream at the Constantia Food & Wine Festival – my all-time favourite was the Lime Curd flavour! YUM! Their ice cream is handmade; most of the ingredients are sourced locally and organic.

You can pop into their kitchen to pick up a pint (cash only) from 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday, or even better you can order on the webshop if you have a specific flavour you would like them to keep aside for you. You can collect your order from; either their kitchen in Mowbray, or any one of the markets and pop up shops. {See below this post for detailed list}

Unit 22A | corner of Weymouth and Wyecroft Road | Mowbray | Cape Town | +27 (0)21 447 7690

  • Häagen-Dazs

Häagen-Dazs is a family favourite! Whenever we visit the V&A Waterfront we pop in to their shop, the girls love the Raspberry Sorbet and I am quite particular to their Vanilla Caramel Brownie. Their ice cream has an incredibly rich flavour, smooth texture and creamy taste, because it contains less air, Häagen-Dazs is denser and richer than other luxury ice creams, creating its signature slow-melting creaminess.

Shop no. 129 | Lower Level | Victoria Wharf | +27 (0)21 421 0744

  • Sinnful Ice Cream Emporium

We usually frequent the shop in Muizenberg but they also have an outlet in Camps Bay. Sinnful is a Cape Town favourite and very popular with my readers. They give new meaning to the term gourmet ice cream with their interesting blend of flavours like Heavenly Hash, a blend of marshmallow, chocolate chips, fudge and vanilla ice cream or Koeksusters and Amarula!

Shop 5 | The Promenade Centre | Victoria Road | Camps Bay | +27 (0)21 438 3541

  • Ice Café

This was another reader recommendation and her favourite flavour is Blueberry and Fudge, two separate flavours that are combined and it must be in a served in a sugar cone!!

Situated in Kalk Bay, you can buy your ice cream and enjoy it while taking leisurely stroll, taking in the sights. Other delicious flavours you can try include blueberry and cream, rum and raisin or ginger and cinnamon.

Main Road | Kalk Bay | +27 (0)21 788 4816

  •  Gelato Mania

Gelato Mania, situated in Green Point Cape Town, is a unique gelateria, which specializes in Artisan gelato (traditional home-made Italian style ice cream).Using an age-old traditional recipe, Gelato Mania offers taste sensations, which are refreshing bursts of exceptional flavours, leaving you craving more!

Every scoop of Gelato Mania is a unique blend of quality, flavour and an unforgettable experience, bringing to life their promise of  “memories you can taste.”

65 Main Road | Green Point | Cape Town | +27 (0)21 439 2074

  • The Venezia Ice Cream Parlour

A quaint little Italian spot where you can indulge in gloriously creamy gelato. With an array of gorgeous flavours this ice cream parlour never fails to impress.
92 Main Road | Sea Point | Cape Town | +27 (0)21 930 2952

  • Lecca il Gelato

Lecca il Gelato, situated in the picaresque town of Stellenbosch, was the first real Italian ice cream parlour in South Africa and opened its doors in February 2006. It is owned and managed by an enthusiastic team of Italians, who are committed to creating an authentic top quality ice cream. They only use fresh, individually selected ingredients from across the globe and do not add any preservatives, additives, vegetable fats or artificial colouring to our ice cream.

Their flavours include exotic taste experiences such as Champagne ice cream, Portofino (chocolate and whiskey) and they even have Soya gelato for those that are dairy intolerant.

15 Church Street | Stellenbosch | Cape Town | +27 (0)21  886 4694/5

  • Marcel’s

Marcel’s is the home of delectable frozen yogurt, which is great, if like me you like to watch your calorie intake! It was established in 1989 and now has 12 outlets. A family favourite in our house is the English Toffee or you can try exciting new flavours like Lemony Cheesecake and Rich Espresso.

Lower level| Victoria and Alfred Waterfront| Cape Town | +27 (0)21425 2633

  • Eastern Food Bazaar

This was a recommendation from one of my readers – apparently the Kulfi is amazingly delicious made from pure milk, sugar and fruit and only R10 per tub.

NEIGHBOURGOODS MARKET

Neighbourgoods Market

Biscuit Mill |Lower Albert Road, Woodstock |9am-2pm, Saturday

EARTHFAIR ST GEORGE’S MALL

In the pedestrian mall, in the centre of town. Lunch crowds, office workers, wandering tourists. Great for meals and now ice cream if you’re in town on a Thursday afternoon. See you there, corner of St George’s and church Street.

Earthfair St George’s | St George’s Mall | CBD, Cape Town | Thursdays 11am-4pm

PINT & CUP SALES

STARLINGS CAFE URBAN FARMER’S MARKET

We love being a part of this small-yet-perfectly-formed farmer’s market in the heart of the Southern Suburbs. Come find us under the pear tree in the back courtyard, where we keep delicious company with dairy, honey, vegetable, fish, egg, chicken and pasta producers!

And remember, you can select this as a pick up location for online orders in our shop.

Starlings Café | 94 Belvedere Road | Claremont | 4-6pm, Wednesdays

THE LARDER MARKET

This is another secret spot we’d like to make less secret. Sonja and her team of cafe elves make fabulous light meals and the best baked goods in Cape Town. We hang out there with Simply Wholesome, Cure Deli Meats, and Ocean Jewels Fish on Thursday afternoons, drinking tea. And selling pints and cups.

The Larder | Block & Chisel Store | Corner Kendal and Main Roads | Diep River | 3-5pm, Thursday

Look out for some fantastically indulgent ice cream features next week and a giveaway or two!

Top Sushi Spots in Cape Town

Even though winter is on our doorstep, it does not deter me from craving sushi. It is one of my favourite foods to eat and I love nothing better than an indulgent night out with sushi and bubbly or a chilled Sauvignon Blanc! With this in mind I thought I would share my Top Sushi Spots in Cape Town and a few recommended by you, my readers.

Sushi

  • Willoughby & Co

This is by far my favourite sushi spot and although it is situated inside the V&A shopping centre, the sushi is worth the hustle and bustle of the surroundings. Actually we always do a bit of shopping first and then relax and unwind with the aid of delicious sushi and great wine. To view or download their sushi menu click here.

Shop 6132 | V&A Waterfront | Cape Town | 021-4186115

  • Beluga

Not only is their sushi delicious but they also have great special offers, you can enjoy sushi at half price before 7pm daily and on Sundays. On a balmy day you can sit out in the cobbled court-yard and enjoy great sushi while sipping on delicious local wine! To view or download their sushi menu click here.

The Foundry | Prestwich Street | Green Point | Cape Town | 021- 418 2948/9

  • Sevruga

Sevruga offers fresh fish, wonderful sushi, a great location and an excellent selection of some of the best South African wines. To view or download their sushi menu click here.

Shop 4 | Quay 5| V&A Waterfront | Cape Town | 021-421 5134 |

  • Wakame

Their seafood has always been top-notch and the restaurant is extremely popular and busy but the brilliant sea views make it a wonderful choice. To view or download their sushi menu click here.

1st floor | Corner of Beach Road & Surrey Place | Mouille Point | Cape Town | 8005 | GPS -33.90012,18.40529 | Telephone +27 21 433-2377

  • Village Sushi @ De Noordhoek Hotel

Imagine my surprise when a reader recommended a sushi spot right on my doorstep! The Hotel has been around for a while but the sushi is a new addition to their menu. We decided to make this our Mother’s Day lunch venue and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. One of the great aspects of the sushi menu is they offer a 12/20 piece sushi platter, which you can design yourself, this is great if you prefer either a certain type of sushi roll or a particular type of fish. To view or download their sushi menu click here.

Village Lane | Noordhoek Farm Village | Noordhoek | 7979 | Cape Town | 27 (0)21 789 2760

  • Cape Town Fish Market

This is a popular choice for us, especially if we are dining with our kids, as the restaurant is really child friendly and they also offer a host of specials daily. The Sushi Bar with its conveyor-belt of tasty treats will leave you hooked. To view or download their sushi menu click here.

World Fair Trade Day

The 12th of May is WORLD FAIR TRADE DAY! World Fair Trade Day is a global day of celebration of Fair Trade – around the world over 1,000,000 people will be doing something to mark the day.

To find out more about Fair Trade Day visit their website www.wftday.com. On Saturday people all over the world will be CELEBRATING FAIR TRADE in their own unique way, some events are quite large, some are tiny and could just be a few people getting together for tea.

The object of the day is to spread the word – tell someone who does not know about Fair Trade, enlighten them as to what it is all about.

So I thought I would let you now about something happening in our community, The Foodbarn Deli will be celebrating with a Bean There Fair Trade Coffee Day.

For every coffee bought at the Deli {sit-down only} on Saturday, Pete and Franck will donate R5 towards buying coffee harvesting equipment for a group of Rwandan coffee producers. So go along and support them, the more coffee you drink on Saturday, the more equipment they can buy for the farmers {and they make awesome coffee!}. For more information on their coffee partner in this initiative, click on to the Bean There website.
