Famfest Fun April 2013

FamFest_Logo-sml

Today I am bringing you news about a fun new festival, happening in Cape Town, it is something exciting for families and friends alike! It is the first ever FamFest, which takes place in Constantia, on Saturday April 27 2013. You can expect the beautiful sounds of a music festival and the wonderful goods of a market, with the added spectacle of a circus and you are still only half way there.

Director and Co-founder of 4Leaf Agency Frankie Hannigan, a father of three young boys, imagined FamFest into existence with children at the forefront and the festival prides itself on being 100% child-friendly.

Taking place on the Claremont Cricket Club fields in Constantia (next to Virgin Active Gym), the festival gates open at 10 am and close at 9pm, after the screening of a family-movie at an outdoor-cinema.

FamFest has four zones – a Kids Zone, a Teen Park, a Chill Out Area and the Main Stage – which flow seamlessly into each other. The Kids Zone, staffed by child minders, offers fun activities and entertainment for younger children. The Teen Park will include an acrobatic show, break dance demos and lessons, gladiator jousting, a mechanical rodeo bull, bouncy horse racing, Foosball and Air Hockey tables. There will also be a partly shaded Chill Out Area where families can relax and re-energise.

K, Ray and the Bird and the Rob Thompson Trio are two of the confirmed bands to light up the Main Stage – suitable for adults, this zone includes fully stocked bars with a great selection of wines.

The drink stalls are geared towards the youngsters including a selection of juice stalls, ice tea providers and slush puppy machines. Keeping food options simple, FamFest offers good old-fashioned, hearty selections to keep both young and old going.

Health, Safety and Security are paramount and every child is given a wristband on entry, with parents/guardians asked to write their telephone numbers on the wristbands. There is a clearly visible meeting point, with announcements made throughout the day to ensure smooth operations. There is also on-site medic.

We are very excited to be giving away a “Family Pack” of tickets to FamFest, to one lucky reader, which includes 2 x Adult Tickets (Including a cinema ticket)  and 2 x Under 18’s Tickets (Including cinema tickets).*

Ice Age 4 Continental Drift Review

On Sunday we went to the first ever SA screening of the much-anticipated Ice Age 4 Continental Drift in 3D, we even got to see it before the US! This is my Ice Age 4 Continental Drift Review:

The film was super funny and along with the usual characters we got to meet a few new ones. As Manny, Diego, and Sid set out on their most action packed adventure yet, they are joined by Sid’s crazy long-lost granny. After a Continental shift occurs Manny, Diego and Sid find themselves separated from the rest of the herd. The three friends are forced to set sail, on a ship crafted out of an iceberg, in an attempt to reunite with the rest of the herd. Along their treacherous journey, they encounter a pirate ship and are taken hostage.

Another new character we meet during this new adventure, is a female sabre-tooth, named Shira (Jennifer Lopez), she is one of the notoriously bad pirate crew. Shira sets out to destroy Diego and also challenges his view of what a family really is and his loyalty to the herd.  Eventually she realizes the pirates are only out for themselves and who her true friends really are.

I cannot forget to mention Scrat and his acorn adventures, that take him to places that no prehistoric squirrel has gone before.

The main focus throughout the film is on the importance of family, how vital it is to maintain a close bond between parents and children and the unconventional family unit, that these animals have formed as their “herd”. The film is both funny and heart warming and we all thoroughly enjoyed it! In my opinion it may be the best Ice Age yet!

Ice Age 4 Continental Drift is due to be released in cinemas on Friday 29th June 2012.

Ice Age 4 Continental Drift

We have very luckily been invited to attend the screening of the much-anticipated Ice Age 4 Continental Drift, on Sunday afternoon, what a great way to start off the holidays!

This all-new chapter in one of the most successful film franchises of all time brings together the visually epic and the emotionally powerful; the humorous and the heartfelt – plus the world’s most beloved prehistoric squirrel-rat and the ultimate unconventional herd of this or any Age.

Scrat’s nutty pursuit of the cursed acorn, which he’s been after since the dawn of time, has world-changing consequences – a continental cataclysm that triggers the greatest adventure of all for Manny (Ray Romano), Diego (Denis Leary) and Sid (John Leguizamo). In the wake of these upheavals, Sid reunites with his cantankerous Granny, and the herd encounters a ragtag menagerie of seafaring pirates determined to stop them from returning home.

The film sounds like heaps of family fun and the girls are so looking forward to it.  I will definitely post a review next week after we have seen it.

V&A Waterfront Kids Holiday Program

The midyear holidays will soon be upon us and if you are not jetting off to some faraway destination you will most definitely be interested the fantastic indoor children’s programme that the V & A Waterfront is offering.

From June 24 until July 15, a combination of free and affordable activities will be on the go daily from 10am until 5pm, for children aged four to nine years.

Barrow Court, in the heart of the Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre and adjacent to children’s retailers, is where pint-sized food lovers and blossoming eco artists should go to have a blast starting from July 3. The Waterfront’s Kids Ahoy play zone is offering one hour workshops, at R50 per child, where your littlies will be introduced to the fun side of food, arts and crafts.

Activities such as pancake decorating, craft making and even Mini Master Chef challenges, where children will learn how to make their own mystery main meal with pre-cooked ingredients or decorate desserts with filling, icing and fresh fruit, will entertain and delight while giving mom and dad an hour of their own time,” said Chantelle Cole, V&A Waterfront Executive Manager of Strategic Marketing. “At 4pm each day, there will be free puppet shows and an opportunity to meet Sam the Two Ocean Aquarium’s penguin mascot”.

From July 3 in the Red Shed, alongside the Cape Town Fish Market and Ster-Kinekor, kids will be entertained by qualified child minders with age appropriate toys and games for R30 an hour for up to two hours, freeing up parents to do their shopping or have a relaxed meal.

In the Craft Market, adjacent to the Two Oceans Aquarium, a one hour craft market, at R50 per child, will be hosted twice daily; parents are welcome to join in the fun. Plant Craft Mania at 1pm, will see children potting, planting, painting, platting, pressing, decorating and doing creative recycling, while animal craft creations at 3pm will spoil pets back at home with specially decorated drinking bowls and homemade bird feeders.

Children can make friends with ducklings, piglets, chickens, guinea pigs and rabbits at the Craft Market’s Petting Farm from 10.30am until 4.30pm daily. Entrance is R20 for all ages.

Children can also enter our ‘Mouse Explores the Waterfront’ colouring-in competition by collecting a sheet from Barrow Court, and completing it either at home or while at the V&A Waterfront and enter before July 22 to win great prizes such as a birthday party at the Two Oceans Aquarium valued at R 1 650, Happy Hopper Memberships or a Mini Master Chef DIY Cooking Hamper valued at R 500”, said Cole.

Space for all activities is limited and bookings can be made at the Waterfront Information Kiosk from June 23.

Other family friendly activities include favourites such as the Wheel of Excellence, the Jolly Roger pirate boat, Scratch Patch and cave golf.

Artjamming

www2

A few weeks ago we celebrated my eldest daughter’s 11th Birthday. Luckily being a January baby we have always been blessed with good weather, so a pool party or the like has been the theme. This year however we decided to change it up a bit and book a party at Artjamming, in Cavendish Square in Claremont. Both my girls love art so this seemed like the perfect venue!

What an amazing place, run by a wonderful young lady, Megan, who was both enthusiastic and hugely talented. After the girls were shown the ropes, they went about selecting their choice of paint colours – they all marvelled at just how vast the choice was!  They were then let loose to do whatever their creative spirit dictated. Most of them thought that a more abstract approach was the order of the day and we ended up with quite a few Jackson Pollack inspired pieces!

All in all it was a fun-filled, creative way to spend an afternoon and celebrate a special person’s birthday. If you are looking for a party venue for your kids or just a fun family outing have a look at their website, Artjamming,  it is well worth a visit!
