South African Maths Challenge 2012

Maths Challenge

SA Maths Challenge

Schools, classes and individuals are once again invited to compete in another exciting and educational SA Maths Challenge due to take place on the 18 and 19 September. The internet-based challenge, which is free to all learners from Grade R right through to grade 12, enables anybody to take part in real-time maths challenges powered by the Mathletics platform. Here they can put their best mental arithmetic skills against other students from around the world. Not only will the top performers go into the selection process to become Ambassadors of the World Education Games 2013 but there are lots of other exciting prizes up for grabs for the top students, classes and schools in each category.

The challenge is run in conjunction with 3P Learning, the founders of World Maths Day, and encourages learners from all over the country to practice hard to break the South African record for the largest online maths competition in the country. Rob Masefield, SA General Manager for 3P Learning says that in line with the goals of our education departments, this challenge is an ideal way for teachers to inspire learners by letting them do something different and inspiring with Maths.

The competition is very popular as it encourages learners of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to have a go at maths in a fun, interactive and accessible way and at a level which is suited to their varying abilities. They can improve the speed and accuracy of their maths in a fun interactive manner. Best of all participation in the competition is free – all students need is internet access, says Masefield.

Registration for schools is already open and students need to register before the night of 17 September. There are two distinct stages. Each day runs from midnight to midnight. The free practice session for learners commenced this week on 3 September allowing them the opportunity to hone their skills before the big event. Learners and teachers can go to www.samathschallenge.co.za to register and take part.

The first day is a Curriculum Maths Challenge where students are set a special challenge curriculum course, suitable for their age group. “This tests the students’ knowledge of Maths concepts, “says Masefield. The second day is where the fun really starts and here students compete in a live maths challenge. In sets of 60 seconds they play mental arithmetic races with other students from across the world. “Not only does this test their concept knowledge but also their speed,” says Masefield.

Masefield confirms that students already licensed for Mathletics or Spellodrome need not register and can automatically participate in the challenge by signing in to www.samathschallenge.co.za and using their existing user name and password.

In the 2011 South African competition nearly 50 000 students were eligible to compete and it is anticipated that the response this year will be even greater. “So come on, learners, register and get practicing!” encourages Masefield.

Calling all foodies, wine lovers, outdoor adventurers and wine farm fans! Show your love for South Africa’s winelands by voting for your favourite nominee in the country’s first ever, consumer-driven, interactive wine tourism award – the KLINK Awards.

Klink Awards

Klink Awards

The KLINK Awards have been launched by Wine Tourism South Africa, publishers of the Wine Tourism Handbook, with the objective of inspiring South Africans to explore and enjoy the experiences offered by the country’s winelands.

Hailed as the ‘Idols’ competition of wine tourism, a panel of industry-related professionals have nominated the top five finalists in each of the KLINK Awards’ fourteen categories. Now it’s up to you to go to the Wine Tourism South Africa website , Facebook or Twitter pages, see which top wineland spots are amongst the nominees and vote. What’s more, those who vote will stand the chance of winning special prizes such as wines, weekends away and restaurant vouchers.

From the 27th of August to the 24th of October you will get the chance to choose who will be crowned champion in not-so-typical categories such as:

  • The ‘Family Day Out’ Award for Best Child-Friendly Venue on a Wine Farm;
  • The ‘Tread Gently’ Award for Most Green Wine Farm;

The full list of categories is available on the website and the winners in each will be announced on the 25th of October.

Please leave a comment below this post with your details and who you are voting for and you could stand a chance of winning 1 of 5 copies of the Wine Tourism Handbook!

To help you vote here are a few of my favourites{Click on the link or button to vote}:

  • Vote for Gorgeous Bubbly and Canapes

  • Vote for Spier

  • Vote for Haute Cabrière

  • Vote for Fairview

The awards are about celebrating not just the wine made in these regions but also the way in which it is made, the people who make it, the restaurants that pair it and the landscape that gives it birth – all based on the experiences of the consumers themselves. This is a unique concept in that it is a competition for the people by the people,” concludes KLINK Awards and Wine Tourism South Africa Founder, Monika Elias.

Flexi-bar

The Flexi-bar is a revolutionary fitness tool from Germany, which activates both voluntary and involuntary muscles in a shorter space of time. The Flexi-Bar was originally developed by physiotherapists in Germany and was designed for rehabilitation purposes. The tool assists with injury prevention and faster injury rehabilitation.

Due to our modern-day lifestyle, our children spend far too much time indoors and not enough time engaging in physical activities such as climbing trees, playing on jungle gyms and riding bikes. This type of inactive lifestyle has led to an increase in the under development of children’s muscles and co-ordination skills.

The Flexi-Bar, available from Flexi-Sports SA, is a great tool for introducing the concepts of core conditioning and dynamic torso stability to children, as well as being an entertaining and stress relieving way to exercise. The Flexi-Bar is a proven therapy for mending and preventing back pain, therefore training with the bars will result in strong healthy backs and better circulation for the learners and this will lead to more effective working.

According to ADHASA, ADHD is believed to affect 10% of the South Africa population, and is prevalent in every ethnic and socio-economic cluster. Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder is believed to affect 8-12% of school-aged children worldwide.

Children suffering from ADD and ADHD can benefit from using the Flexi-bar, as it helps improve concentration, blood flow, oxygen intake and co-ordination. The Flexi-Bar engages muscle inter-play and improves intra and inter-muscle coordination.

Traditional gym work-outs are not enough to combat ADD and ADHD in children as the training only encourages muscles to work in isolation as opposed to interplaying and working together.

The Flexi-Bar uses vibration training to create muscle tone and strength.  As you swing a Flexi-Bar, vibrations pass through your body. These signals tell the muscles they are being pushed away from their centre and they must automatically contract to bring themselves back. The deep core muscles are involuntary, thus they are notoriously difficult to target and strengthen effectively. This is why 80% of the population suffers from back pain at some stage of their lives.

The Flexi-Bar can be used off the sports field and in the classroom by remedial departments and results in improved concentration, blood flow, oxygen intake, coordination, as well as right and left side brain stimulation.

Many schools in South Africa have joined the likes of some of the world’s top sporting teams such as Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Newcastle FC and a host of Olympic gold medallists, in choosing the Flexi-Bar tool to add to their existing sports-specific programme.

To order your Flexi-Bar and enquire about Flexi-Bar training sessions please visit www.flexi-sports.co.za  or call 021 683 9981. You can also follow Flexi-Bar on Facebook.

Eating Out, Eating Out With Children, Food, Kids Food

Child friendly restaurants in Cape Town

Child friendly restaurants in Cape Town

By Dalene Ingham-Brown

Not Spur AGAIN! There are plenty of places in Cape Town that are willing to give your bambino crayons, a balloon and energy sucking jungle gym. It’s about time you give yourself a break from those easy-to-clean brown pleather seats and see how it’s done at other child friendly restaurants in Cape Town.

Primi Pods

Above: Primi Piatti – Primi Pod

Primi Piatti – Primi Pods rocks the socks off of family restaurants. Interactive, colourful, educational – the perfect docking station for your kids. The Primi Pods section can be recognised by its bold splash of colours and the mosaic counter in front of a pizza station. Primi has caregivers on hand to teach your kids how to make pizzas and how to bake biscuits while you settle down to a glass of red and browse the extensive, mouth-watering menu. What’s nice about the Primi Pods section is that it is in plain view of the rest of the child friendly restaurant so you can keep a loving eye on your kids if you want to.

Primi Piatti outlets that have Primi Pods sections can be found in Constantia, Cavendish, Sea Point, Camps Bay, V&A Waterfront, Canal Walk, Somerset West, and Willowbridge Table View. To sweeten the deal even further they often has great specials – check out the latest Primi Piatti specials here.

Scallywags Play Café

You’re hungry and little Johnny is bored and can’t sit still. Time for Scallywags Play Café! This café is one of the best child friendly restaurants in Cape Town because it is an absolute fantasy play land for children and their menu options are all made from organic and free-range products. Family dining with a conscience.

Scallywags has so much to offer children: trains that smoke, a beautiful life-size gingerbread house, climbing walls, baby-pen, boys corner, dress-ups, jumping castle, ball pool and slide. They even have flying butterflies and dragon flies with glitter fairies for the girls, and for the boys, spiders and spider webs.

While little Johnny gets rid of some of his energy (please, oh, please) you can sit down and browse the menu at this family friendly restaurant in Cape Town – Rosmead Avenue, Kenilworth. Finally a break.

Moyo

Above: Moyo in Spier – one of the more upmarket family friendly restaurants in Cape Town

What a great family outing. It’s hard to say whether you or your child will end up enjoying the experience more. Moyo in Spier is an elegant child friendly restaurant in Cape Town with a spicy African flair. Interactive activities like face painting, hand washing and traditional dance entertainment makes for a truly enjoyable evening for the whole family. Moyo has large, open spaces, gorgeous pathways and gets its cosy atmosphere from the enormous trees, interesting artistic structures and the winding pathways flanked by greenery. Book a table in the tree-tops and enjoy a fun family outing that fills the gap.

Deer Park Café

Described as comfy and casual, this family friendly restaurant in Cape Town, Vredehoek, serves breakfasts, lunches and light meals. Its appeal is that it is situated right next to a fenced off child friendly park, so you don’t have to worry about your child running off, although keeping half an eye on them is always recommended and inevitable from a caring parent.

The menu is super child friendly with fun options like a ‘baby cappuccino’ which is frothed milk with sprinkles on top. Heaven only knows that the last thing your child needs is caffeine!

La Cabane

Above: La Cabane is one of the few child friendly restaurants in Cape Town with a massive jungle gym

La Cabane in Hout Bay is a restaurant, tea room and playground. The restaurant gives off a home-style family atmosphere, the team room is much the same and the playground is a monster fort of excitement for anyone not-tall-enough-to-ride-this-ride. Children love it!

La Cabane wanted to make sure that their family friendly restaurant in Cape Town was a place where parents and children can both enjoy themselves to the nth degree. With 4 state of the art 40″ LCD televisions, moms and dads can enjoy watching rugby/tennis, sipping on a brewsky/tea while the kids let their imaginations run wild in the La Cabane playground.

Joostenberg

Country style cooking and large open spaces for kids to play. This family friendly restaurant in Cape Town is situated off the N1 in Muldersvlei. In winter, the huge fireplace roars with life and warms little bodies while they eat. In summer, the shaded stoep provides a lovely spot for an afternoon meal.

Kids can enjoy horse and wagon rides, or a ride on a pony. There is also a large jungle gym and stretches of lawn where children can happily play while parents enjoy a hearty meal.

Blue Water Café

Above:  Higgeldy Piggeldy Farm right next door to Blue Water Café

This family friendly restaurant is nestled in Kommetjie’s super child friendly Imhoff Farm. Make sure you arrive half an hour before you plan to eat as you’re met by CO2 emitting camels waiting to be ridden on the way into Imhoff Farm. Kids will also love the Higgeldy Piggeldy Farm right next door to Blue Water Café, where friendly rabbits, sheep, goats, pigs, ducks, geese, chickens, guinea pigs and a pony are waiting to meet them. There is also a snake park within Imhoff – worth a visit if your children are eager to see slithering reptiles in a safe environment.

When it’s time to eat, your family can sit down to the freshest ingredients; the chef whips up New Cape style food and scrumptious pizzas baked in a wood fired oven. When it’s time to play, your kids can run around the safe, enclosed garden and jungle gym. A great excursion for the whole family.

With these child friendly restaurants in Cape Town you can enjoy good quality food, a lovely setting and a dose of relaxation knowing that while your child is not at the table, the manager isn’t giving them an espresso and a free kitten.
