Cape Point Vineyards are now offering either an afternoon picnic, served on Wednesdays to Sundays from 12:00 – 15:00 or you can have the option of sundowners and a picnic, which are served Wednesdays to Sundays from 17:00 – 20:00.

We spent a glorious evening there recently lazing on the beautifully manicured lawns sipping on bubbly and feasting on a decadent selection of cheeses, meats and preserves. There is a lot of open space to run and a jungle-gym, so definitely take the kids.

It is definitely well worth a visit and we intend to return soon, before the weather changes and the cold winter months are upon us!

Entertaining – Simple Starter Recipe

I love entertaining and I am always thinking up simple recipes to add to my dinner party repertoire. I try to ensure that my simple starter recipes are easy to prepare and plate, leaving me more time to spend with my guests. Plus with this particular dish, there is no cooking involved, especially good for those of you that are prone to burning things!

Simple Starter Recipes

Ingredients:

  • 200-400g Smoked Salmon or Trout (Amount dependant on how many people you are serving)
  • 1 Packet Rocket Salad Leaves
  • 1 Packet  Baby Salad Leaves
  • 2 Large Lemons
  • 1 Tub Crème fraîche
  • Chives
  • Dill
  • Cucumber for garnish (Sliced into thin ribbons)

Method

Simply wash and arrange the salad leaves on your side or starter plate and put to one side. Cut your salmon into long ribbons and roll into pretty parcels and set aside. Next mix your Crème fraîche  and the juice of one lemon, in a bowl until smooth, add salt and pepper to taste. Chop your chives and dill, add that to your Crème fraîche and mix well, don’t forget to taste it, add more lemon or salt and pepper if needed.

You can store everything, covered, in the fridge until you are ready to assemble it, I recommend doing so just before you are ready to serve the dish. Arrange the salmon on top of your salad leaves, grind a good measure of black pepper over the salmon and then drizzle a bit of lemon juice over it. Add a generous dollop of your Crème fraîche mixture on the plate and garnish with your cucumber ribbons. Serve immediately with lemon wedges on the side and a bit of crusty ciabatta bread, this dish is well paired with a glass of chilled sparkling Brut Rose!

As of October last year  Johannesburg is now our home. Having moved from Cape Town (Sarah used to live in the same area that I do), I approached the move with the usual disdain (for anywhere other than the mother city), that one would expect from Capetonians 😉 I have however been pleasantly surprised.

My goal in life is to raise content and considerate children, in a happy home with my amazing husband, to continue cooking with abandon for as long as I love it.

Beautiful Simons Town

If you are looking for something fun to do this weekend why not take a trip to beautiful Simon’s Town.

Simon’s Town sometimes spelt Simonstown, is a town in Cape Town, South Africa, which is home to the South African Navy. It is located on the False Bay coastline, on the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula. For more than two centuries it has been an important naval base and harbour (originally for the Royal Navy and now the South African Navy).

The town is named after Simon van der Stel, an early governor of the Cape Colony. The area is steeped in both history and tradition and is home to some wonderful Victorian architecture.

Simon’s Town is also the home of the False Bay Yacht Club which has keelboat regattas most Wednesday evenings and weekends.

Attractions

Simon’s Town is a popular tourist destination offering great restaurants and coffee shops. One of our favourite restaurants Bertha’s, is right on the pier and offers wonderful views of the harbour. 

Other attractions include antique shops, galleries and fine walks.  If you are feeling more adventurous you can take a Boat trip from Simon’s Town jetty. There are many options to choose from, these include harbour cruises, Seal Island boat trips, high-speed boat trips to Cape Point or even whale watching.

For the extreme sports junkies, there is Great White Shark cage diving, boat trips on offer.  If you would like to go exploring, as well as getting some exercise then try sea kayaking, from Simon’s Town jetty.

If you are looking for things to do with the kids, pay a visit to Boulders Beach. Boulders Beach, located a few kilometres to the south of Simon’s Town, in the direction of Miller’s Point, is part of Sanparks. It is a pay-for-entry beach, made up of small coves of beautiful white sandy beaches. The water is calm and shallow, sheltered by giant Cape granite boulders. You will also see the colony of African penguins, which have called Boulders Beach home since 1985. Boulders

You can also visit the Scratch patch and mineral world. Kids love sifting through all the stones, to find the prettiest and most unusual colours!

The Low Down on Trans-Fats

I have always been aware of maintaining a healthy body weight, what foods I eat and making sure I exercise regularly. Don’t get me wrong I like a delicious fillet steak and chips as much as the next person but that does not mean that I am oblivious to the health implications of eating something deep-fried in oil!

With an alarming percentage of women in SA being overweight, obese or inactive we cannot ignore the fact that consumption of unhealthy foods, is not helping the situation. With these factors in mind it is not surprising that Trans-Fats have been banned in South Africa.

What exactly are Trans-Fats?

Trans-fats are formed, when converting liquid plant oils into a semi-solid spread, like margarine, a so-called industrial hydrogenation process whereby the vegetable oil is exposed to high pressure and heat with hydrogen gas bubbling through it, in the presence of a nickel catalyst.

Under these conditions hydrogen atoms open up double bonds converting unsaturated fats, in liquid oils into hardened saturated fats. Unfortunately some (+/- 40%) of the newly created saturated fats are not 100% identical to pre-existing natural saturated fats. This is due to the fact that they have a “kink” caused by the molecule undergoing a structural change from cis-configuration to a trans-configuration at a double bond usually in the middle of the molecule. Chemically trans fats may be identical to certain natural fats but structurally they are different due to a “kink” in the middle of the molecule. You are basically taking something natural and making it unnatural! The double bonds in unsaturated fats make them less stable and more vulnerable to oxidative damage (e.g. they go rancid very quickly)

What are the health risks of eating Trans-fats?

Eating trans-fats provides no known benefit to human health, however there is definitive correlation between a diet that is high in trans-fat content and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels. High cholesterol levels can translate into an increased risk of coronary heart disease, which can be fatal?

Serum trans-fatty acids are associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer and there is also an association between fat stores of trans fatty acids and breast cancer in post-menopausal women.

Other emerging risk factors are coronary artery disease, insulin resistance, diabetes, dyslipidemia and heart failure.

Last and certainly not least, trans fatty acids contribute more to weight gain than monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.

Where can we find these nasty’s?

Trans fatty acids can be found in items like certain margarines, baking shortening, oil used for deep-frying chips and chicken, confectionary items such as rusks, croissants, pies, crackers, cookies, doughnuts etc.

So how can we avoid these potentially risk causing fats?

Well the only way to avoid these risks would be to avoid eating food containing trans fatty acids, as I said previously it could be difficult to avoid them altogether, it does however require you to make more informed decisions on what food products you buy and or eat.

What does the new legislation in SA say about Trans-fats?

The basic low down on the law, is that food products are only allowed to contain a maximum of 2% of trans fats. Major fast food outlets such as KFC, Steers and Wimpy have already aligned themselves with legislation and changed their fats to be trans-fat free. Other major retails chain are in the process of ensuring that the products they sell fall into line with these new laws.

Ultimately the law can only dictate policy, it is up to us as the consumer to be aware of the products we are buying or consuming and exercise a healthy, wholesome approach to food. Especially when it comes to the health and well-being of our children! 😀
