My Favourite Facial Primers for 2013

Following on from My Favourite Fragrances for 2013, I thought I would share My Favourite Facial Primers for 2013.

Favourite-Face-Primers-for-

I only started using a facial primer at the beginning of last year and when I asked around for advice on which ones to try, most everyone I asked, recommended MAC primers! I have been using MAC since then but recently discovered the Smashbox Photo Finish Primers, at a beauty event I attended.

MAC Stobe Liquid Lotion

MAC Strobe Liquid

The MAC Stobe Liquid Lotion was the first primer I bought, which is technically more of a light diffuser, as it contains iridescent pigments. These pigments produce a soft, radiant light on the skin, reducing the appearance of skin imperfections by providing a natural-looking glow.

I have enjoyed using it and love the silky finish it gives my skin! I did however find that it made my pigmentation more exaggerated! I actually stopped using it for a while but recently discovered that if I use it over my MAC Prep+Prime Natural Radiance Primer, it works really well and gives my skin a lovely luminous glow, without making my pigmentation appear darker. Retail price R335.

MAC Prep+Prime Natural Radiance

MAC Prep+Prime Natural Radiance

The MAC Prep+Prime Natural Radiance primer is definitely my favourite-favourite! I have found that no matter how much product I have on my skin, this primer stops my skin from breaking out. It forms an invisible barrier between my skin and any product I apply afterwards, protecting it from any harsh chemicals. The formula is a silky gel emulsion, rich in natural ingredients, which hydrate and prime the skin, to improve foundation or powder application. It also controls oil buildup on the skin and promotes a smooth texture. It contains Vitamins E and C to protect the skin and caffeine to calm the skin.

As I mentioned above I have been applying the MAC Prep+Prime and following that with the MAC Strobe Liquid Lotion, before I apply my foundation. I usually use this combination if I am going out and want my makeup to last that bit longer. For everyday makeup application I usually use either the MAC Prep+Prime or the Smashbox Photo Finish Blemish Control. Retail price R380.

Smashbox Photo Finish More Than Primer Blemish Control

Smashbox Photo Finish Blemish Control Primer

The Smashbox Photo Finish Blemish Control is a more recent addition to my beauty regime, I was introduced to it at a Smashbox beauty event I attended last year. Smashbox has quite an extensive range of facial primers, with the recent introduction of the Blemish Control and Dark Spot Correcting Primers.

The Blemish Control Primer which I received to try out, treats breakouts, provides oil-free hydration and keeps skin clearer over time. It contains 2% salicylic acid which helps treat breakouts. I was advised to use this primer before I apply my face cream, whereas the other primers I apply after my face cream and sunscreen. I have enjoyed using this primer but after I recently changed my facial sunscreen and have found that using the two products together causes a strange reaction when I apply my foundation. I have taken to only using this primer at night, when I do not use a sunscreen and if I am going out and need to apply makeup. Smashbox Photo Finish Primers range from R350 – R380.

I would really like to try the Smashbox Dark Spot Correcting Primer and see if it makes any difference to the appearance of my pigmentation. I have added this to my list of new products I would like to try. I am also trying out a primer from Dermologica at the moment.

Do you use a facial primer? If so which one works for you? Please leave a comment below the post letting me know.

MAC Cosmetics SA Online Store

MAC Cosmetics SA recently launched their online store in South Africa, which is a great development for MAC lovers like me! At an event I attended recently we were introduced to MAC’s online offering and given the heads up on how to navigate their online site. Instead on products we were sent home from the event with a digital gift voucher to do our own shopping, on the MAC Cosmetics SA Online Store. Exciting!!!

After much deliberation I made my list of MAC goodies I wanted to buy and started shopping. Needless to say I spent more than the allotted amount on the voucher but did show a certain amount of self-control 😉

Once my goodies were ordered and the payment done, all I could do was sit back and wait for my products to arrive. Lets say patience is not a virtue I possess but MAC did not disappoint on the delivery time and all the products arrived correctly as ordered! The MAC team promise a 3-8 day turn delivery time, dependent on where you live.

I thought I would share a video of my online experience and the MAC products I bought.

Everyday Makeup Essentials

I know everyone has there own set makeup routine and products which they love but I thought I would share some of my Everyday Makeup Essentials with you.

Everyday-Makeup-Essentials

As some of you may know I have been struggling with pigmentation over the past few years! Unlike most women who get pigmentation during their pregnancies, mine only arrived after I had my kids. I used to be one of the lucky ones, who could get away without wearing any foundation at all! Well those days have passed and like most challenges in life you can either deal with it and accept it or let it ruin your life. So deal with it we must 🙂

After searching for foundations and concealers for a while now and buying so many products which do not work, I eventually enlisted the help of professional makeup artist Kirsten Murphy Rossiter(yes my sister-in-law – lucky me)! She helped me find the best products for my skin type and more importantly the correct colours for my skin-tone.

The most important thing for me is that I don’t want to look like I have too much foundation on, that “caked on” effect, especially for everyday wear. I need medium buildable coverage, which looks as natural as possible! Having combination skin I also need to stay away from products which will leave me looking like an oil-slick by lunch time.

MAC Trends Spring Summer 2013

MAC-SS2013

Just before my trip to Thailand, I attended a MAC Trends Spring Summer 2013(SS2013) event, which I enjoyed immensely! Unfortunately I did not have time to write about it before I left for my travels but I had to share it with you!

I learnt a few new tips and beauty tricks to use in my makeup routine and I hope you will find it helpful as well, especially when looking at choosing colours for the season ahead.

The morning started out rather wet and cold but we were greated with steaming  muggs of coffee or yummy hot chocolate, which was the perfect way to warm up! We were also treated to a variety of eats, giving us a chance to mingle and meet some of the other beauty lovlies.

MAC-SS2013-2

We were then given the heads up on beauty trends around the globe by the lovely Michelle-Lee Collins. She introduced us to the key elements for MAC Trends Spring Summer 2013.

The most significant trend for SS2013 is a move to minimalism, where ease and edge become one, a season when the key beauty notion is one of simplicity.

Michelle then explored the various trends for the season, highlighting the properties of each one, demonstrating each look on one of the gorgeous MAC models.

The purity of a perfectly pared back skin (SIG-NATURE). A languid wash of colour (NU-ANCE) that takes in shades of highly pigmented pastels from turquoise and lemon to silver and translucently dark metallics. A monochromatic Bedouin bronze, blurred on the eyes and bone structure (PURI-TAN). An easy graphicism of purist colour blocked on lids or lips (SCI-CHEDELIC). There’s a delicacy to beauty this season that speaks to the way women really want to look in the here and now, a time when subtle, fresh and confident feel more appropriate than hard, sexy or powerful.

There is a definite move away from hard lines, which is key for SS2013. Seamlessly humid finishes, over powdering is out with more of a natural “glow”. Cream colours prevail, with radiant complexions and balanced brows, which tend to dominate the face less than last season. Over tweezed brows are a thing of the past and more natural “fluffed-up” brows are in, forming the cornerstone to every look.

MAC-Signature-Collage

 “Sig-nature”~

The look is naturally perfected, super polished skin which, beautifully rich. Skin is highly reflective with a marble-like, alabaster-like quality.” Mineralized Moisture SPF 15 Foundation, is used to delicately shape and bring skin to life with the most subtle, sensitive techniques. Skin-identical pigments are used around the eye.

Lips are neutral, translucently balmed or with just the slightest touch of lipstick, to perfectly heighten the natural tone. Soft lines, no hard contours…hazes and haloes of light.

Brows frame your look, with no mascara. This sounds a little scary at first – using no mascara but I have tried it during the day and I am liking the softer look you can achieve, by using only eye shadow and liner.

MAC-Nu-ance-Collage

Nu-ance ~

Beauty has had a “palette cleanse” in its most literal sense this season, as clean, popping pastels express a modern romance with paler colour. Think Turquiose, Lilac, Lemon, Mint, Aqua, Apple and Peach — shades pulled from heightened nature, from seascapes to sunsets. A natural base with pops of colour.

Flashes of silver and cold metallic FEEL FRESHLY FUTURISTIC. A nod to the 60s in placement — embrace a rounded eye shape. The new view on smoky: A TRANSPARENT WASH of depth invariably with a metallic sheen. Flat matte is less relevant than buffed-in creamy tints this season.

I am really loving this trend I love using colour on my eyes especially in the evening. This is a fun way to create a bit of drama without being OTT!

MAC-Sci-chedelic-Collage

Sci-chedelic

Op-art colour with refined drama, confidently committed and effortlessly cool, never bourgeois or overstated. Colours are bold and applied with conviction! Vivid colours are worn on a base of lightness and luminescence. Eyes are fierce with bold pops of colour on the lips.

“Poetic with a twist of something edgy, so gutsy and punk it’s chic.”

Even the red lip becomes part of a contemporary colour story, thanks to modern matte textures and pops of hyper-bright pigment. Lip lines are less harsh with a feeling of “colouring outside the lines”.

This look is quite dramatic and probably not suited to everyday wear but experimenting with certain of these elements, can be great for creating more drama, for a night out on the town!

MAC-Puri-tan-Collage

Puri-tan~
A puritan, gently applied, gleaming makeup, with a “sun-kissed” glow. Features are brought out in a palette of desert shades, with sepia eye-tones, transparently tinted in washes of cream colour, adding a sophisticated monochrome feel to the face. Think Bronze, Wheat and Golden Honey-Beige tones, giving a buffed and burnished feel. Within this palette there is a sophisticated return to the smoky eye, which is more effortless and transparent.

It’s about using tan-relevant shades to accent the eyes and add warmth to the face in molten, softly metallic textures.

I learnt so much from this event – one of the key things Michelle pointed out was not not conform to historical beauty norms, try different approaches and have fun with it! A great tip, from Michelle, which I have being using, is to apply colour below the bottom lash line which opens up the eye so much more.

Thanks to the team at MAC for a wonderful morning and a great goodie bag!

Style by Super Mom Seeing Red

Seeing-Red 16

I know the weather today is a bit chilly for this outfit but it was a post that was meant to be published last week but alas did not happen! Well if nothing else here is something to brighten a rather grey day in Cape Town!

These red skinny jeans from Woolworths are my new favourite item of clothing! Well you know by now I love red and lucky for me it is super popular this season. The floral T is also from Woolworths and the jacket you must know by now is from Mr Price and was featured here and here.

Seeing-Red16

The skinny jeans are a great fit, very flattering(so the hubby tells me) and I have taken to rolling the hem of my jeans up, for a preppy-look, which according to Lucy da Costa from Style Society SA is bang on trend! I am loving this floral T which also has the high-low hem I have blogged about before.

Seeing-Red14

These gorgeous pumps, from Luli Pulani, are one of my favourite pairs! Not only do they look good but yes they are red and super comfy too!

I am hoping that this is not the last of the good weather but that said I am really enjoying the transition from my summer wardrobe to autumn/winter and have bought a few fab things, which I will share soon!
